Tires in the Air
Riddle me this O great MOC suspension wizards. There is a seasonal (5 months) 2011 Montana here that the owner jacks up and places jack stands under the axles about a foot from the springs. He says he does the same a home. He does this after leveling. No harm No foul?????? Kind of blows what I thought about jacking the axles.

If he's jacking the part of the axle that's hollow, he can bend it. I jack between the spring shackles where the axle is solid.

He better be checking his tires for excessive wear. Jacking and supporting his axles will probably bend the axles as mentioned and cause excessive tire wear fairly quickly. Obviously this person hasn't heard of the Montana Forum and the wealth of information on it.

The other issue is if he is jacking the axles and is only using the front legs and rear stabilizers for support, he is stressing the frame in a way that I would think it is not designed for (bending). If he is blocking or supporting the frame before and after the axles, and only taking the weight off of the axles, he should be fine, since that is no different than changing a flat (the safe way!). If he is supporting the interior weight of the rig by point loading the axle tubes, he well may be causing damage to the axles as previously mentioned. All of the above does not take into account the old stand-by: "but I have always done it that way!"

I assume he thinks he is saving his tires by eiminating any stress on them or by eliminating contact with the ground?
Like the others, I think he is just asking for problems.

There's a rig no one should buy used.

If it is a foot from the springs, my money is that it is not too bad on it, that is close to the support, but I would not do it, why not just go to the spprings and support the weight there...

He places the bottle jack under the springs to raise the tire off the ground.
Bingo, nothing under the frame.
He does support the slides also.

Maybe a dumb solution, but I'd do it the way it says to in the owner's manual.

I just can't keep it buttoned here ... you'll put WAY more stress on your fiver jacking the whole thing up by the frame (barring a level up system) ... there's absolutely no harm in jacking directly under the springs as that is where the weight is supported anyways. I'm still on the fence about the whole jack stand thing ... the main purpose of referencing frame jacking is the manufacturer's attempt to advert "Joe Average" from trying to put a jack right under the middle of the axle of a #12,000 RV and pumping away ...

YIKES! I picture crushed spring packs and bent slide room inner tubes eventually. Especially if a stand under one of the axles slips......there will be slide room damage for sure!
