Hitch and Fuel Question on 3500
Well, went up in the dark and rain and pulled the Montana out today and got a surprise. I had the dealership install my Reese slider hitch from my Chevy Shortbed. I also had them put a tonneau cover on. Well, I rolled back the cover to hitch up and found that they mounted the hitch in the maneuver position over the axle. In the shortbed the hitch was over the axle when in towing mode. Since its a longbed, it shouldn't be a problem, I guess, but since its different I want to check.
Second question. I went to fill up with fuel for the first time. Well, I had a little under half a tank left and was surprised when it took 23 gallons. I looked in the manual and the only thing it listed for a 3500 was cab and chassis with a tank size of 50 gallons. Is this right. Youch, 50 x 4/gal = real $$$$'s.

Ron my 2007.5 is 38gal so unless they change for 08 I doubt that it is a 50 gallon unit.

My 07 Classic has an oem tank of 34 gallons...check your manual. The chassis cabs come with two tanks...don't know the total gallons they hold.

Our 08 3500 Ext Cab DRW has a 34 gal. tank. I saw a cab and chassis model at the dealer with an extra tank. If you do have a 50 gal tank that would be a bonus.

Anyone know about the Reese slider hitch. Sounds like I have a 36 gallon tank (average of 38 and 34). Just kidding.

Run it until the little needle gets to the red line of the empty mark. Then fill it up (take out a loan) and see how much you have put in. Once you reach the red line you have a few gallons left. Let that be a "VERY SMALL" cushion.
Dang I'm good!
Edited: p.s., The above is based on the S.W.A.G principle.

Refill it at half tank and it doesn't cost as much. If you have a Long bed GM Truck OEM tank it will be 34 gals. GBY...

Ron, I'm not too sure the hitch was installed right. It sounds to me like it should have been installed in the towing position and not the maneuvering one. What concerns me would be in a panic stop if the hitch would be able to slide towards the cab in the maneuver position? That much play could cause a lot of damage in this instance. I would think it should be installed in the tow position over the axles to prevent any possible movement.
The best thing I guess is that the pin will be in front of the axle and not behind when towing, it would have been worse the other way!
Looks like your gas problem has been solved, wish I had 34 gallons!

Steve -
I never considered the fact that the hitch could possibly disengage. I will have to look into getting it remounted. I knew it wasn't right when I looked at it but never even thought about what would happen if it let go. Good point. And thanks everyone for telling me what my owners manual didn't.

Dennis -
The minute I saw it I knew it was mounted wrong. Unfortunately, I trusted the dealer and had them also put on a tonneau cover. I never looked until I unrolled the tonneau in the dark and rain and went to hook up. At that point it was too late. My question was if it would cause a problem, and as Steve pointed out, if something went wrong it could cause a problem. I hope that I only have to have two extra holes put in the truck.
