Will,
Have you ever had an overheat alarm go off on your GMC??
No, but we just got the Mountaineer. In summer with the 28' Sportsman in East TX the fan would be so loud you couldn't carry on a conversation.(my gauge would never move, but IIRC the fan doesn't come in until around 217*, so I know the temperature was climbing) This would be on TX 43 between Henderson and Marshall, just small choppy hills. Some of the LLY engines seem to be worse than others. Guess I'll find out this summer about ours. We hope to hit the high country.

Let me lay this one on you to consider. Now keep in mind that this is about Volvo Class 8 Semi tractors running Cummins ISX engines. We started have a rash of complaints about loosing power. To make a long story short we found that some fuel filters we had purchased (name brand) restricted the fuel flow just enough that we had to hook the computer back up to the truck and re-set the parameters. We,(later on) went back to the fuel filter recommended by cummins and problems went away. Keep in mind also that continamated fuel was not our issue it was the size of the micron filter.
So this is one of them cases where you might listen to your dealer's mechanic when he recommends a brand of filter. There are so goods ones and bad ones out there even though they may be brand name. You engine controls are based on the about of fuel flow available and if that gets restricted, or even if it allows too much - who knows what can happen.

The LLY is known for running hotter than the LB7 or LBZ. My LB7 towing in temps as high as 109 will still hold dead center of the temp gauge. I don't watch the engine temp gauge as much as I watch my Pyrometer, keeping my EGT under 1,150 degrees usually keeps my engine temp dead center. You are right, the fan kicks on and you would think there was a 747 taking off in front of you. =)
