Dead Receptacle

Hey everyone. I have a 2017 Montana 3661RL. The receptacle above the counter next to the refrigerator and below the microwave has lost power. It’s not a GFI, and no breakers are tripped. It’s the only receptacle not working. I’ve pulled the receptacle and the romex coming in is dead. Any help troubleshooting this would be appreciated. Thanks,Terry.

Others have said the wiring cable under the slide may come loose. On some units there is a little box with the wires that connect to the slide wiring. It may be under the slide somewhere. Something to check on. Be careful and turn off the connection tot he trailer.

if you checked all the panel breakers and gfi breakers and did not find anything you may have to find out where that outlet is fed from and go from there, more than likely a connection somewhere that has corroded or is loose. you can take apart what you think may be the fed from another outlet and check or the best way is if you may know someone with a toner like this https://www.homedepot.com/p/Klein-To...-820/309927727 or a electrician to find where it is fed from. good luck

Thanks for the fast response. My slide has no JB that is visible just the junior cord. This snakes back into the belly and disappears. Just trying to keep from dropping the belly pan for further tracing of cable.

Its a long shot but if you have storage (particularly pass thru storage) you might get lucky and be able to see the wire if you take down a side wall. Sometimes you can see a fair distance back thru a rigs underbelly from a pass thru. sometimes.......

I really wish the industry was REQUIRED to have wiring diagrams of the units but that will never happen. Even better if they were REQUIRED to bring wiring back to a central area and label the wires.......oh well one can dream LOL.....

Never thought of using a toner on the over 70volt stuff. I suppose it would work just as well there as on the low voltage wiring.

For sure EVERYONE who owns an RV should also own a volt/ohm meter and know how to use it. Even a dirt cheap meter can save you a LOT of $$ even if your only moderately handy.

Jim, I agree on the volt ohm meter but that toner amplifier is invaluable in finding wire runs between receptacles. You can generally follow the wire right through the walls and ceilings. If you know a telephone or cable TV person they generally have one but if not they are cheap to purchase.

Terry I realize it is not a GFI plug but Montana has always protected several outlets in a chain from a GFI upchain of the problem. They are usually labeled with a little sticker that says GFI Protected or something like that. Being in the kitchen area I'd almost guarantee it is working slave to a master GFI plug. My unit is much older but it has two GFI masters, one in the kitchen and one in the shower/vanity area. They protect several down chain plugs and it doesn't always make sense which are protected by which. I'd keep looking for another GFI plug. Helping others I have found them in the kitchen area, bathroom area, basement, and exterior outlet. Good luck

Darn it I just hate when I have to buy a new tool LOL. The wife has caught on to my "Sure honey, I can build that shelf but I need a new cordless driver" trick. So anytime I can get another guy to say "you really need this tool" its a good day LOL......

If you have solar that might be the outlet that comes from the inverter.

In our rig, the fridge has an empty space below it that has a panel that can be removed by removing four screws. In that space there is a transition connector between the flexible power cord that comes up from underneath and the Romex that goes to the receptacles in the slide. There have been instances where that transition connector has failed, sometimes bad enough to nearly cause a fire. I don't have any photos of under our fridge, but it would be a good place to check if your installation sounds similar.

If you take the basement panel down and trace the power wire going to that slide area, look for the plastic electrical connector that joins two lengths of wires. They have a tendency to burn up like the one in the pic. ALSO, there may be one under the cabinets near the fridge.
