Monthly Generator Exercise

Questions about exercising my Onan 5500:

Do I need to disconnect power cord before starting my generator?
How long should I run it every month?

Any other tips or comments?

30 minutes under load and about 5-10 minutes cool down. Our transfer switch is generator preferred and will switch over to generator when connected to shore power once the generator is up to speed in about 15-20 seconds.
