Refrigerator inverter

We recently bought a used 2011 Montana 3580 RL. It was in great condition. The previous owner had replaced the gas/electric refrigerator with a household one. Instead of 8.5 cf we now have 14.5 cf. I am trying to set it up to run on a battery when we are traveling. The manual says it pull a max of 8.5 amps (1020 watts) when starting. A Kill-a-watt meter says it uses a lot less when running. I tried a 1200 watt inverter that will go to 2400 watts for starting. It won't start the compressor. What size inverter does the factory install when an RV uses a residential refrigerator? I am thinking of going to a 3000 watt with 6000 watts for starting. Are the factory inverters modified or pure sine wave?

First - Welcome to the forum!

I would base your inverter size on what you want to run off of it. If its only the fridge you can probably get by with 1500-2000 watts. There is generally not much of a price difference as you go a little bigger and you might decide to add a few plugs off the inverter at a later time. Would definitely use a pure sine wave inverter.
