axle rating

I know this has been dicussed before but after the tire blow out and doing some research i was looking at my axles and weights more intensly and now i am confussed. My gvwr is 14,400 and i only have 6000 lb axles so my question is why would they show that weight limit on 6000 lb axles x 2=12,000. Seems to me they are way overloaded at gross weight. Why would they do that? Should i contact Keystone and discuss these num.'s. Seems to me they have build an unsafe vechile.

You need to factor in the pin weight also, the front of the unit is not supported by the axles. Pin weight averages 15-20% of total weight (have to weigh to get actual values)

pud2, There is only one way to find your weights and that is to have your trailer and truck weighed, seperately and together. Your actual pinweight will vary with each load. You determine total weight of trailer and then subtract the pinweight from that number and you end up with the weight on the axles. For example. My trailer weighed 14,600 lbs. The pinweight was 2800 leaving 14,600 - 2800 = 11,800 on the axles. This being within the total 12,000 for the 2 6,000lb axles. Every trip will be different depending on what you are carrying. Remember also if you are at max weight with empty tanks and you fill your waste tanks and fresh water tank before you leave, you will probably be over your max weights. I always dump waste tanks and never travel with more than 2-3 gals of fresh water in that tank before I travel......

Hope this clears it up. BTW Factory weights as listed on trailer or in the spec sheets are rarely accurate.

PuD2..Those numbers make you wonder till you realize that there is a lot of weight in the rear of your truck..That is called pin weight and is part of the rated cargo capacity of the truck. Pin weight and cargo capacity are the most miss understood and most ignored figures in towing..Do some research on the subject and your questions will clear up.

Pud2, the above are correct that not all that weight is on the axles. In my case, our actual scaled weight is 14,620. We have 6,000 lb axles. Weight on the axles is 11,760. Pinweight is 2,860 and that weight is carried by the truck, not the trailer axles.

you must weigh the axels seperate as the rear axel carries about 1600 lbs more than the front axel on a 3000rk as i can't tell on others but go on a cat scale and split the axels to get your true answer
