Everything I have read on this says if you are replacing batteries in a dual battery system, both batteries should be replaced at the same time. This serves two purposes; first both are identical and secondly, both are the same age. A weak or older battery could drain a new one in short order, rendering your battery system incapable of sustaining a load.

Just to bring me up to speed, does this mean I should buy a second battery.I had to replace one of my TV batteries last year. Should I also replace the other? I have an '02 F350 7.3. One battery is OEM and the other is now 1 year old.

Hello Mike,
I never replace only one battery in a multiple battery system. As stated by several others, the older battery can shorten the life of the new battery. I learned this the hard way several years ago on heavy equipment, trucks, and farm tractors. When I had a battery go bad, I would replace it and leave the others in place. After awhile it got to the point I was constantly having problems with batteries. I started replacing all of them when one would go bad, and using the good ones in another piece of equipment. Eventually my battery problems were reduced to a level we could live with.
To answer your question, since one is OEM and the other is a year old, I would wait until one of them went bad, and replace both. That is JMHO.

On a recent local trip (Tyler State Park), I found one of the batteries on the pickup not just warm, but HOT. The smell was like sewage. No need to go into all the details, but after talking with my dealer I decided to go ahead and replace both batteries on the pickup. Glad I did.
