Steve R.
Just saw your comments about putting the cc back in after the limit has been reached and using again. My cc company does not look favorably on this, and several times the cc has frozen our account when we try to use too many times in too short a time, as they consider that a possible fraud or loss/stolen card situation. They freeze the card, so, next time we try to use it, there is no authoriazation, we call in, they ask us a lot of questions, and when we pass, they unfreeze. That said, last summer in Iowa, they froze us, we called, there was activity on the card that was NOT ours, and they sent us new cards the next day, at the campground, overnight.
I would rather they be suspicious, as we have been the victims of credit card number theft before. It is a pain in the you know what to get the credit card company and then again in 6 months, the vendor to figure out that they have been had as well. But, gotta tell you when you can prove you were in Virginia burying your grandmother they back down kinda fast if the charges for the same day are in Pontiac Michigan at some fancy hotel. That time, we believe our card number was stolen by am employee of Home Depot, when we returned something for $5.00 and the store required we supply our home address, credit card # and all that on the return slip. Believe me, that does not happen any more, if they start hasslin us, we ask for the manager of the store, explain our take and stand on it, and tell them if they demand all that information for a refund we will no longer shop in their store. Period.
We put the cc in a gas station pump one time, realized we were pumping the wrong grade gas, stopped the pump, put in the same cc and started pumping the correct grade. The cc company froze the account in less than one hour. So, I am surprised you can get $50.00 and then just start pumping again. Good for you!

Never had a problem with it, Carol. I did have the CC company stop the account and when I called they told me the charge pattern was all over the country. And I'd filled up twice in the previous day a couple hundred miles apart. I explained our lifestyle and confirmed the purchases. They put a note on our account and we've had no further problem. I can understand your concerns given your history with CC, though.

Those concerns and our experience of having them freeze the account when we filled a bit, and then filled the remainder with the other grade fuel is just one reason we carry 2 cards. If we happen to hit the wrong grade of fuel, yea, we have done it more than once , then we take out the card, put it back in the wallet and get out the other one to use for the rest of the fill up. A bit precautionary, but saves us having to call the cc company!!
We have never had trouble cause we have filled in say, Brinkley Arkansas and then maybe later that day in Dallas. It was always someone ordering something from Lands End on our card number and wanting delivered to some place in California, or using a high end hotel and then watching porn movies at night (classy people using our cards, eh?? ), or the last one was someone ordering exactly $1,600. worth of books TWO times in 24 hours at the same bookstore, someplace in Arizona ??? Man, I would at least like to be in Arizona when they tried that (as we have never been there! )
Ahhhhh, the stories we can tell, living in the land of CC is such a hoot!

Were you using debit or credit? Many stations limit debit purchases to $50.00. Next time tell the pump you're using your debit in credit mode and see what happens

Don't much care who is setting the limits but I do know it is a real pain in the BUTT
At 1 Flying J I was able to go over $50 with no problem.
At the next 2 Flying Js the pump stopped at $50 but I was able to re-insert the card and finish filling.
At still another there was a sign on the pump concerning Credit Limits at the pump
Visa Card---$50.00
Master Card or Discover---$75.00
In any case the card could be re-inserted
Than at still another Flying J the pump shut off at over $60 and the tank was full.
At the Wal*Mart, where my original post started this thread, I was limited to $50 and could not re-insert the card.
At other Wal*Marts there was no credit limit on any of the cards.
I cannot believe this is being done by the Credit Card companies.
It just doesn't make sense to allow
#1-unlimited purchases at one station
#2-$50 limit at another with no re-insertation
#3-$50 limit but being able to re-insert the card and finish filling at still another.
and all of this is on my Chase Visa Card
Anyway you cut it it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Here in Eugene Oregon there is a Shell station on Prairie Road off of Hwy 99 that makes you pump your own diesel. The only place in Eugene that I know of. Not sure about the dollar limit.

Glenn, I agree with you that the system seems to make little or no sense. However, I am under the impression that the loss history at each individual gasoline retail outlet may dictate the varying policies. For example, at some stations with a high experience of identity theft, you are required to key in the zip code of your billing address; in other stations, that is not required. I may be wrong, but I am of the opinion that such decisions are made by the credit card companies (since they are the ones on the hook for fraudulent card usage rather than the retail outlet) and that the varying policies are a result of variations in experience at the particular location.

That could very well be the situation.
You mentioned the Zip Code thing and I did have that happen to me twice in the past year. Don't recall where or what brand.

The Murphy Oil at the Wal-mart on US 19 & Park in Pinellas Park has a $75 max. Might try it next time.

I have to say I believe it is the actual fuel station that sets the limits. As Glenn said, one station is one way and go 10 miles down the road and the same company just different station is different. The Flying J I use to buy both my diesel and gas says they have a limit, but to this day it has never been happened. =) I ran a gas bill earlier this summer of over $375 and the pump charged it to my card with one swipe of my card.

bigred715, that place in Eugene that makes you pump your own fuel may be breaking the law. In the 16 months I was working in Oregon, the only way they would LET me pump my own fuel from MY 5000 gallon storage tank, or from the cardlock pumps, was to take a safety certification test. The first time I pulled into the Shell station in Boardman, I hopped out of the pickup, grabbed the fuel nozzle, and was imediately chewed out by the attendant girl.

When I filled up in Oregon the attendant said it was OK for the customer to pump their own Diesel fuel, but you can't pump gas.

c5racer, maybe they're coming to their senses, and changing the rules. Thats good, I have more patience now, but back then I sure got tired of waiting on one attendant to take care of every island.

In New Jersey it is against the law to pump your own but many still do it and take their chances. Being I was from out of state I pleaded that I didn't know and got away with it.

I was told by a Oregon attendant that New Jersey had just changed to allow self service and now Oregon is the only state that does not allow it. Have any of you heard if this is correct?

When we spent a month in Oregon I also got tired of waiting for an attendant and would just get out and start the pump myself. That usually got attention and someone inside the building would come out and finish it. Nobody ever questioned me. I just acted like I was pleased with their courtesy of pumping it for me.
