Safety Recall 24V-234

We received a new recall notification for our Montana related to the stove LED lights. Has anyone seen a “repair procedure” ? Based upon information provided, it appears that they are simply cutting the hot lead to the LEDs on the stove knobs due to o we heating.

Any additional information would be greatly appreciated

I saw the recall and you're correct. It appears that the correction is to cut the power lead. Lame

I located a paper copy of the repair procedures. Keystone is instructing the dealers to cut the power coming off the main board (and cap the leads) and to remove the switch on the face of the stove that turns the oven light and LED lights on and off. They are supplying a plug to fill the hole when you remove the switch. I suspect that it is too expensive to fix the main power board and much easier to just disconnect the features that we paid for when we purchased the unit. Thank you Keystone.

One other thing the letter says is "Owners should disconnect the power to the unit when not in use." This can be interpreted in a couple of ways. Does unit = stove or unit = RV?
The stove is hardwired to a DC circuit and you have to remove the screws holding the stove in place to find the wiring. So by "unit" they really mean RV..i.e. disconnect the battery and don't leave the RV plugged into shore power.
There are 4 circuit boards on the front of the stove; one for each burner and one for the oven. They have power to them at all times and a small magnet in the knob activates the lights when turned anywhere except the off position. But until the main power wire is cut there is always 12 volt power present at each circuit board which is why those that are failing and catching fire seem to do it randomly, even when no one is around.
Disclaimer - I'm not offering advice here - this is a NHTSA safety recall - but...
If you are a DIYer, you can remove the cooking grate, lift the stove top burner platform (the latch is in the center so give it a quick jerk upward), and access the power wires. The Red wire that comes from the back on the left side and goes to the switch on the left front of the stove is the 12 volt positive wire. Cut, cap & tape with electrical tape. Verify that the lights don't work with the switch or by turning each of the 4 knobs.

If you choose to do this you may want to take a pic or two. Keystone may have to keep sending letters to confirm the work is complete because of the fire safety danger.

While I seriously doubt it, I'm hoping this is step 1 in the process to make everyone "whole" by actually replacing the front controls on the stove in our relatively expensive Montanas!!

Here’s the link with access to 6 docs. Click on the blue text. The last doc shows the repair. Others show the stove serial numbers affected.

Thanks for this thread gang. Just cut and capped ours. With before and after pics just in case. I doubt we will ever need them , but no bid deal to document it. In the two years we have had the unit, she says she has never used the lights anyway.

After inspecting underneath the cooktop. I discovered my burner igniter doesn’t lite the 3rd burner. Can the igniter be purchased separately or do I need to buy the whole burner.

Just guessing, but I bet you can get a generic ignitor to fit. Might take a bit of fabrication, but that can be pretty simple. Replaced the ignitors on our backyard propane barbecue years ago. IIRC it took some holes drilled and bending of a few mounting tabs. Not a big deal.

It's all BS. The recall is for the lights on the gas knobs getting filthy greasy wet and shorting out. This is what's causing the burnout. They probably had one damn major issue which has caused this whole recall. I checked mine and we clean after each usage. The grill is spotless there is no crap on the lights or near the lights. The recall repair is also bs. They want you to eliminate the all the lights including the oven light. I'm not down with that. As long as I keep my cooktop clean and not wet near the lights it's not a problem.

I didn’t realize they were going to cut all the wires. I would like to fix it back. My back burner igniter doesn’t work anymore. Is it an easy fix? Any part numbers for it?

You can call Keystone customer service and they will send you the instructions and wire nuts. Also by doing this you will probably stop getting the letters for the recall.

Flashracer, when I lifted the cooktop to DIY the wire capping, the middle burner igniter wire came off. It’s a small spade connector. You might check to see if your wire is connected.

To check the igniter, it might be possible to reach the non-working igniter with the wire from another burner. Or, you could remove the non-working igniter and move it to another burner to connect it.

(The capping is only to cut power to the LED lights around the knobs and in the oven, not the igniters.)

Lastly, I self reported the capping to Keystone so there is a record of the correction. They wanted pictures of the capped wires and the label under the cooktop that shows the stove model and serial number.

I tried moving the igniter wires around but it still doesn’t work. Igniter is bad. I see something on Amazon that might work. I hope. Haven’t pulled the igniter and swapped them to see if it works just the wires. I wish I never had the recall done.

To the best of my knowledge and assuming that the recall process was completed correctly, This recall should not have any impact on your igniters and how they function with the burners. This circuit for the illumination of the knobs is independent of a functionality of the igniters.

The recall is for the lights only. No igniter wire. Honestly, I ignored the recall. It states that a fire is possible due to moisture on the light. Logic kicked in I opened my stove and it's spotless inside. Like new thanks to DW. I don't need the burner lights but I do NEED the oven light which is eliminated with Keystones fix. Stupid IMO! Keep your stove clean!
