Took off on a foggy morning from Del Rio, Texas for Corpus Christi, Texas. After about 30 miles down the road I sensed something strange with the hitch, stopped and checked, and I had high hitched the trailer and the pin was sitting on top of the clamped hitch jaws. That made a believer out of me and first chance I got ordered the Butch safety latch. I think it was less than $70 and definitely money well spent. I was so lucky I didn't wipe out my truck bed and wreck the trailer.

If the truck isn't pushed down by the pin skid plate, I don't feel comfortable with my hitches. Whatever works all the time is a good thing. John

Now I hear Blue Ox no longer makes their bed protector. . It appears there are three kinds of owners out there, those who have had it happen, those who are lucky and haven't had it happen yet, and those with some kind of device to keep it from happening/or happening again.

Fiver owners are like bikers; those who have been down and those who will go down, and pilots; those who have landed gear up and those who will. We had a bad Reese hitch come apart and did $7000 damage to the truck; nothing to the fiver. My insurance carrier went after Reese and they paid in full including my deductible. Put on a Blue Ox shortly after and have had no further problems. Needless to say, I don't now nor will I ever own another Reese product.

I was researching bedsavers and everything kept pointing to Blue Ox. I knew the part number I needed but could not find ANY bedsaver info on Blue Ox website. Emailed them about that and they responded "We have discontinued the Bedsavers and are all out of stock of them. This is why there is no information about the Bedsaver on the website."

Jerry, there are several here on the Forum FOR SALE and you might want to post here to see if anyone will respond. I know of one for sure and possibly another one. Also, if you do a Google search you may find a dealer that still has them. I recall seeing one about three months back that had some but don't know the specifics as to what models they had or what hitches they fit on. When you post here on the Forum you might state what hitch you have to be sure of getting the correct Bedsaver too. They did come in numerous model #'s for specific hitches.

The hitch is a Reese made for the Ford factory prep. The hitch is an 18K, p/n RP30142 {99% sure of p/n}. The Blue Ox p/n is BXR4105. The problem I have is that there are no bolt holes on the sides of the hitch for mounting bolts, so I want to see what the bedsaver looks like and installation instructions before I make a decision. Kinda anal that way.

Don't understand why this is so hard. Blue Ox is no longer in the bedsaver business. Trying to get info on Butchs King Pin Safety Latch. I have seen pictures and looks interesting. Tried to get application and pricing info and was led to 5thwheellatchkit.com. There is literally nothing on that page. Any help from anybody would be so much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Sounds to me like someone should start building a Blue Ox type bed saver. Like Blue Ox it must be passive. A device you have to engage is not a bed saver. JMHO

No help for it
It looks as if no one makes a bed saver anymore! Don't know if it was a case of lack of demand or liability. Too bad!! Maybe they are making the hitches foolproof now. LOL!

As long as humans operate the hitch, it will never be foolproof.

I don't understand this thread. Are people posting they had accidents because they didn't properly secure the hitch pin and lock it? Or something else?

Yes, that's what the product does. It's a neat idea, but if you are sure you will never make a mistake, it isn't necessary. Some just want a little peace of mind.
I found a few on Amazon. They are still out there and you can also find the PDF.

Butchs King Pin Safety Latch
I believe that "Butch's King Pin Safety Latch" may have gone out of business or closed for some reason. I have not been able to find their home page/web site for several months now. I have one of his safety latches and love it. I just transferred it from my old Reese hitch to my new B&W hitch; fit's like a glove. But I can't find anything online for the business anymore.

I have also been trying to find a link to Butch's without any success. If someone has a phone number or other contact info I would truly appreciate it.

On the road today, passed a SOB sitting in the left lane, tow vehicle was on the right shoulder with the tailgate ripped off. Two long skid marks apparently from the landing gear starting in the right lane and ending where the trailer stopped in the left lane. Looked like it was a B&W hitch in the pickup.

Blue Ox BedSaver is available at Amazon. $150 if you have a Pull Rite and a whopping $295 if you have a Husky. Of course I have a Husky. Why is it 2x the price for one over the other for a nearly identical product? Because they can.
