I have pulled a Montana with my 2000 F-350 7.3 the entire time since it was new. I pulled a 3255 first, now a 3670. I have 117,000+ miles and use the out of OD only when pulling in mountains. The transmission is as solid as the day I bought it. The dealer and factory reps. did not recommend any different. I have been in approx. 45 states with no major temp. changes in trans.
I am a believer in maint. and service my trans. every 20,000 miles or every year.
Now that I have said this my problems will start, murphy's law.

I use the Tow Haul setting when going up hills or when the engine starts lugging down. When on straight level freeways etc., I always use the OD. If the engine is not lugging, why keep it in Tow Haul with higher RPM's ? I find the higher the RPM's the more fuel used.

I follow the same procedure as you have stated. I wonder if one reason we can do that is that we have a 2955 which is smaller and lighter than many of the other Montana models and gives us a margin in the power demand from the truck. Just my thought.
The 2955 remains our choice of Montanas as it fits our life style and travel better than any of the others.

I always use tow haul flat or mtns as we ran the blue ridge parkway for 150 miles last fall and got 10.4 with diesel. it keeps the temp down and saves on the brakes

It sounds like different brands' tow/haul work differently. The Ford does not lock out overdrive. I see no perceptible change in rpm whether in tow/haul or not EXCEPT if at a speed where tow/haul will choose a lower gear. When at a speed where tow/haul and non-tow/haul use the same gear I see no rpm difference. There may be a small difference but I don't see a change on the tach.

The Allison does not lock out overdrive either when in tow haul mode. You have to push the button on the shift stalk in and hold for 2 seconds to take it out of overdirve when in towhaul mode.
It will downshift to fourth out of fifth in tow haul shen required. great system!!!

Same as most others - I just put it on as I start the tow and don't mess around with it. When just have to remember to turn it back on after a stop. The DW always reminds me since I concentrate more on other things at start up.

Always use T/H - now... Going through KY mountains, decided to experiment. Kicked out the t/h. 5 miles later I quickly punched it back in again as the trans temp spiked. I was not happy. Won't do that again...
My Allison also has a little learning problem. That 57-61 range does need some help by kicking the t/h out then back in again. Drove 30 miles when we first picked up our Montana at the dealership at near red line before I figured that out.
Sailor, You are indeed one BRAVE individual if you pulled that 3000RK 150 miles over the 45 mph Blue Ridge Parkway. We were on it with just our 2500 GMC and Cheryl was a nervous wreck. Saw a small class C (the only RV on our 50 mile trek), and I made a remark about how brave that guy was to attempt that. I might try something like that, but Cheryl would never be a passenger in such an adventure.

Dave, if you tow the parkway, check bridge and tunnel heights first. Some stretches have tunnels not friendly to the Montanas. We towed a section with none of those obstacles. It's a beautiful drive no matter which state you are in.

Steve, the stretch we ran did have tunnels. Didn't note the clearance as I was not thinking of ever pulling anything down into Asheville that way... Cheryl was against me driving and sightseeing at the same time.
