We have 4 HD receivers total which alone would make up the difference between our bills. We have been with directtv for 12 or 13 years and the price sure has gone up as every other price has. The technology has also advanced.

I hate Direct TV and before we sold the house I hated Comcast more! But the DW has some shows that are on local channels she likes and I have to have the NFL during the season. Actually since coming south the end of December I had to catch a couple of the games at an AppleBees, which is not a cheap afternoon. So, next season Direct TV will be getting even more money out of me when I have to sign up for the NFL package. Still living pretty cheap without the stick house though.

Something wrong with this picture when the TV and phones cost more than the trailer payment.

I took this as a "tongue in cheek" remark.........but it's true!

Most of the TV channels that we watch stream over the internet. We can add 2GB of data per $10 increments on our Verizon MIFI. For the cost of our DirecTV bill we could add 20GB. Just for curiosity think we will check it out.

Check out dish also. Our Dish bill is significantly less than our 20 gig verizon bill and I get the extra sports channels and HBO. Also, when we were in the Wichita Mountains recently we had no phone service so no internet, but Dish came in just fine so at least we got weather warnings etc from one of the two.

I will be signing up for DirecTV the next couple of months. (Dish does not have access to local network affiliates.)
Other than the start-up costs, I was thinking the monthly service was only $35-$49 per month depending on the service you choose. Are there monthly add-ons that are making the price go over $100 per month?
Streaming the programming via Roku or AppleTV or KindleTV is NOT the answer. At 1.5 GB per hour of programming, that makes getting a satellite solution much more cost-effective.
Am I missing something here?

Those rates will get you to sign up. In about a year they will rapidly increase in a relatively short period of time.

$10 a month for HD receiver, $6 month for SD receiver, $8 a month for service plan (they fix problems, replace bad receivers, , etc. and you get a free hardware upgrade every 2 years). We have two HD receivers and 2 SD receivers, plus the service plan, local stations, it all adds up to well over $100 a month, but we have $1500 invested in an auto-seek satellite for the rig, can freely move receivers from house to rig, so we are happy overall when the other options are considered.

Rich,
Glad DirectTV works well for you.
However,...Check the fine print. Direct TV doesn't give away anything for free. Ask them if this "free" upgrade starts a new 2 year contract with early termination "fees".
It's been my experience that they are not nice people and have deceptive business practices.

Our Directv bill this month was 133.98. Four receivers and the protection plan. The service has always been excellent. We are due for a complete upgrade when we get back to Ohio that will be free. We enjoy the flexibility of sat and are not unhappy with the cost.
The protection plan adds 7.99 per month to the bill but gives a free upgrade every two years as well as total protection.
We have the total choice extra package.
Sales tax 2.94...Communications service fee??? 11.06
HD receivers 10.00.
we have 205 channels. Some of them do not speak English which is the only language we do speak. There are some religion channels that can forgive sin for a donation. Helen watch's some of the cooking channels and exercise channels. We have no movie channels as we use red box when we have the urge to watch a movies. We listen to many of the music channels but none of the teen age stuff as we are far from teenagers. There are some good old peoples music channels.
We watch what we choose to watch and are pleased with the service.

DirecTV has a mental block against understanding the full timer lifestyle. Each time we call to get tuned into local stations where we are camping they want to change our address to that location. It took almost a year to get them to leave the billing address alone, although each time we have to go through the spiel with the representative. Haven't overcome the tax stuff yet. They add taxes to the bill based on where we last asked for local programming. It stays that way until the next time we update our local programming.
