As a certified BBQ judge and BBQ caterer my suggestion is to get a Weber Smokey Mountain. It breaks down into three parts that can somewhat nest, doesn't weigh much and uses charcoal and wood chunks for that smoke flavor. Many BBQ contests are won with these. http://www.virtualweberbullet.com has a lot of information about them and how to use them. When I hit the road fulltime that's what I'm taking with me.

We use our Smokin-It electric smoker. It hold a very even temperature and releases very little smoke, but it is the best smoker we have owned.

Weber has a new, smaller smoker that we bought and take camping with us. Breaks down real nice and easy stores. After many meals cooked on the smoker, your compartment will smell like heaven all the time. We use a Bradley smoker at home. Here is a link:

I have this and other smokers at home. And if I took one on the road it would be the electric MasterBuilt.
It dosn't produce the nasty visible smoke, just the favor portion of the smoke which is what you want. That's better around close neighbors.

I love this topic!!! I watch all the bbq shows on satellite and do cook a lot on the smoker when I have time. When I finally retire I plan to buy a smoker so I can smoke fish to take along on our travels as I plan on leaving it at the summer camping area/home. I know you don't want to give up any secret recipes but maybe we could start a topic on that and everyone could make suggestions about how and what to use? Just an idea, time to eat!!!

Smoke from a smoker is no different than smoke from a campfire. The smoker smoke just smells better. We smoke every chance we get. We make our own bacon and made Canadian bacon today. Next up: Hot Italian Sausage.

Do yourself a favor, and check out the Traeger PTG. Oh how I love mine. Just talking about it makes me want to go get a rack of ribs and get them smoking for dinner tonight.
It's a very portable unit, and very efficient.
