On the Ford and Dodge, the difference between 3/4 ton and 1 ton single rear wheel is the rear spring pack. They have the same axles and tires. The air bags will provide the additional rear suspension. In my opinion, you'll be fine. You'll be over some of the numbers, if that bothers you. It doesn't bother me and has never caused a problem for us, not even any stability or seat of the pants comfort problems. However, a dually will provide the additional payload rating to keep you within that rating. I don't see the need but obviously my opinion, which is based on six years of towing and 150,000 towing miles plus an additional eight years of recreational towing, differs from that of some others. Look around and go with whichever way makes you comfortable.
