Got a New Set of Shoes
Got around to changing out my brakes to disc. It ended up being a lot easier than I expected. Took two days but still have to finish hooking up actuator and bledding brakes.
Ended up going with Kodiak 13" rotors and Titan Brake-Rite actuator. Got them from Etrailer. Used Timken bearings that are USA made. All the brake lines and fittings were from the local auto parts store. Total cost was about $1,500 dollars and a few busted knuckles.
Was suprised when I took off the old brakes, 3 blown seals and pretty much all the brakes were toast with this one being the worst. Pretty sad from a unit that is less than a year old and less than 6,000 miles.
My trailer has the E-Z lube axles and it looks some one got a little crazy with the grease gun and blew out the seals, they were filled solid with grease and it was also all over the brake assy. Never did like the E-Z lube setup, prefer to dis-assemble and inspect and repack on a regular schedule.
Can't wait to get it on the road.

That brake shoe looks terrible. That is not acceptable for one year and six thousand miles. I guess I will have to keep a real close eye on mine. What kind of brake controller is on your truck? Also were you doing a lot of traveling through the mountains? I am sure you will be real happy with the disk brakes.

Not much mountain driving. Do have a couple of passes we go over to get out of L.A. but since exhaust brake is used on descents very little braking is needed. I think the leaking seals getting grease all over the brake assy had something to do with it. I did notice that the adjuster on that brake was out pretty far.
The brake controller is factory set-up which is compatible with EOH actuators.

To do that to brakes in 6K miles, something is not set up right.
You truck has a exhaust brake from hell, and will stop the truck and trailer under normal use with very light braking.
I would assume you are using the tow/haul mode and ALWAYS run with the exhaust brake on. Your dash controller on heavy electric 5.0.
I just had my bearings packed @ about 12K miles and the trailer brakes are just getting seated in. I have 7K Dexter axles. 2" shoes.
I suspect you will experience short pad life if you do not do something to correct the over braking of the trailer.

Agree, something was amiss for your brakes to be that worn after 6000 miles. But, man oh man, would I love to do the disc brake upgrade on mine. Awesome job!

I agree, something was not right. I do have my brake controller adjusted properly and use the exhaust brake anytime I am towing. My feeling is that with the blown grease seals a tech must have adjusted the brakes to compensate for the lack of braking. I did notice that the brake adjustment screw was almost all the way out and since I have not adjustd the brakes at all I have to assume is was done prior to taking delivery. I guess this is one more thing needing checking duting the PDI.
On my previous SOB in the seven years I had it I never needed new brakes and they looked nothing like this. I did annually grease and inspect them.

What you said about someone using a powered grease gun on your EZ-Lube hubs is probably right and that's why the brakes are toast. It's also why I grease my own. Haven't found anywhere that I'd trust to do it right yet.
