My new 2015 stairs are Lippert and so were my 2102's but these new one's are not as well built ,I never had a problem with my 2012 Lippert stairs.... SSOOOO I will just keep using stair supports on these new one's

We had two rivets shear on our steps. I could not find step bolts to fit and just replaced the rivets with a regular bolt. Keystone replaced the steps (out of warranty) at last years rally as a good will/safety issue. I assumed that my step problem was due to my being a "full figured" man, it now appears that this is a bigger issue.

One of the rivets broke on one side of our steps last month. I replaced it with a bolt and so far works good. Will get the stairs replaced later on when time permits. They do seem like rather weak steps.

Our rivet started to pull away John took a hammer to it and it broke off. We replaced it with a bolt and washer, we just keep an eye on them all the time.

Ours did not "break" in the classic sense. What would happen is the stairs would become extended while we were traveling down the road if we had a strong side wind or went over a bump. The first time it happened I had looked in the mirror and saw them extended and I accused the DW of not putting them up when we left the CG. We pulled over and she went back and put them away. A little later I looked in the mirror and there they were, extended. Pulled over and put a bungee on them to keep them closed.
While we were at the 2013 Rally we were able to have our rig serviced. As we were closing it up in the morning and going over the issues with Carmen, the DW asked if we needed to put the bungee on the stairs. Carmen heard this and asked what was going on and we told her. When we picked up the rig that afternoon, we had a new set of stairs. They have worked fine ever since.

Years ago, with SOB trailer, I learned the constant flexing of walking up and down the stairs caused them to break at their attach points. Just too much repeated stressing. What I did to prevent this, (and now doing it on my new Montana too) is to build 2 adjustable supports that go under each side of the bottom step, spanning the gap between the ground and the underneath of the bottom step. This transfers all of your weight directly to the ground instead of leveraging it into the trailer through those stair attach points. Works beautifully, totally eliminating any flexing of the stairs at all. Who wants stairs/steps that move or flex whatsoever anyway???
The trick is to make sure they are adjustable so that the gap can be totally filled no matter the distance once the rig is leveled. I used pieces of galvanized pipe and bolts and nuts and pipe flanges, to make it solid and adjustable. I'll get some pics. posted of it. Very simple, very effective and very inexpensive.

Our 2014 3402RL steps are very springy and it's a bit scary knowing the same type stairs are breaking on other rigs. I've put in a warranty issue with my dealer but nothing yet. I heard at the Mid Atlantic rally about other rigs with my type of step have broken and I saw the replacement steps which are a lot more stiff and feel solid. I just hope I can get Keystone to replace before they break when I'm walking down them. I know that will end in a big lawsuit. You'd think Keystone would jump at a chance to fix this proactively.
I tried to call Keystone Customer support and told them about it, but they said I had to process this warranty request via a dealer. They were of no help

The dealer is Keystones field representative. You have a problem, take it to a dealer, the dealer evaluates your problem and makes a recommendation to Keystone. That's how it works with car, washing machines, etc.

When you say call customer service. Is that calling Keystone directly or working through the dealer??

I consider this as just another effort to put the least expensive product on a Montana, or Keystone product.
The steps on my '14 have a rivet that is all but pulled out. Just more crap from Lippert. Now the suggestion is to install a support under the lower step at the owners expense. (which I have done)
My 17 year old motorhome had the original electric steps on it when I sold it. It was not a Lippert set of steps.
Realize the folks that own Keystone, also own Lippert so crap in/crap out.

Unless something has just changed recently, I believe that last statement is untrue. Lippert is own by Drew Industries while Keystone is owned by Thor

Interestingly enough, the good after market steps we replaced our originals with is made by Lippert and we're very happy with them several years latter.

My springy steps that need to be replaced are made by Hickory Springs. Maybe Keystone should have suspected something from their name.

Yes you are correct, I mis-spoke. However I still stand by my position that the quality of the products used is below par and the short life of something as critical as steps, which when they fail, could cause serious injury to the step user.
My 17 year old steps on my pusher worked as if they were new. Guess the statement that "they don't make them like they used to" is still true.

I use a step support for the bottom step and 2 jack stands for the next step up. Nice and solid.
