Grease seals replacements
Is it necessary to replace the grease seals (Dexter 010-036-00) every time I pull the wheels to inspect the electric brakes on my 2010 Mountaineer 305RLT? I have had two seals fail, at different times, both on the rear axle, in the last two years and the guys at the trailer shop where I got the replacement seals said they ALWAYS replace the seals every time they pull the wheels off. Maybe this is just to ensure that they don't have a seal go bad after they did some work on the axle.
I intend to pull and inspect every year now that I have had two failures. Is replacing the seals EVERY time you pull a wheel really necessary? They are not that expensive-- I think about $8.00ea but didn't want the hassle of getting four new seals every time I pull the wheels for inspection.

I certainly do. There is a chance that the seal may get damaged when the hub is removed. If this happens then there is a sure bet that the seal will fail. $8/wheel is a small price to pay for piece of mind. Tim

Quit buying them from Dexter and you'll get them for about 1/2 what you quoted. If you are simply removing the wheel to look things over, I'd just put a very light coat of grease on the spindle where the seal runs and put it all back together. If one damages a seal, it generally occurs when reinstalling the wheel ... so new or used, the seal has the potential for damage. If I go to the trouble of jacking up my fiver, removing the tire and wheel, cleaning and repacking the bearings ... I'm darned sure not going to attempt to reuse the wheel seal.

I'm sure there are others, but I have had great help from Red Neck Trailer Supply. I have never purchased online, as there is a store in the area when we are parked for the winter. The seals only cost $4/seal, so it is not worth the risk of getting your brakes damaged from a leaky seal. Red Neck stocks Dexter parts. http://www.redneck-trailer.com/

Seals are a minor expense compared to having grease get into the brakes!
