If the struts failed, best path going forward is to prop the bed up, remove the struts and start searching for replacements. When you have the load off of the struts and they are removed, it will be readily obvious if they have failed, are bent, or have other signs of mechanical failure.

Can the bed be lifted higher to release the shock?? Fetching at straws here, I know you have probably already checked, but was there a manual (that thing that us men won't read) or is there a web-site for the struts?

This may sound silly, but found it on rv.net. Have Helen sit on the end of the bed and press down yourself on the bed. The post on rv.net said the added weight will compress the strut. This is assuming that the mattress is on the bed??

And I found that some model struts are equipped with locks. Strut manual would state this I would assume, if you have it?? Whatever you find out. let us know as this is a new one on the forum as far as I know.

I think I would still remove one strut and then do some investigating. Are both sides locked in an extended position or just one? You could remove the one that is not locked, then see if additional weight on the bed will cause to other to retract? If the strut is brand new, it will be difficult getting it compressed if it is fully extended.

You guys were right....the struts were rated at 80 lbs pressure on them and the new ones were the same however the new ones were very, very stiff and I did not put enough presssure on them. I leaned on the bed hard and they went down. I guess the old ones were weak... Hope they do not decide to pop up or we will be slammed into the wall like a murphy bed. That was a new one on me....

Glad you got it Rich, my next suggestion was to replace the headboard with a mirror so that you could watch tv from your newfound Montana bedroom elevated recliner bed!!

How weird is this....our bed did the same thing today when we removed the old mattress to install our new sleep number bed. We called our RV service guy and he told us to press down with all our weight and it should close....it did! Looking forward to a good night's sleep on our new bed tonight!!

Do you think that when you over extend the struts they lock???? We did over extend them to install them.. BTW we also have the Americana bear bed..same as the sleep number. You are gonna like it.

We found the same thing when we removed the mattress to swap it out with the new one. The new one was 15 inches thick and weighed a bit more than the old one. When the mattress is off the platform be very careful not to have your face over it if you attempt to open it, it will remove teeth and most likely your nose. It is quite hard to close without the weight of the mattress on it.. Dave
