12 VDC compressor question
Went out to the storage lot where I keep our 2007 3400RL to check lug nut torque and pressures before we take it out for a short trip next week. The rig is under cover, but no electrical supply. Bought a Harbor Freight 12 VDC compressor a while back on a recommendation from this forum. The tires were at 70 psi. Was able to air up two tires before the unit started blowing the fuse. Normal? Defective unit? Did I burn it up? Decided to store it until tomorrow, will go back and try to air up the other two tires.

I've got the big one from HF...with the alligator clips that go on a battery. It does a fine job, I'd take that one back, they'll give you a new one.

I did the same thing. Bought a Harbor Freight 12 v dc compressor and it aired up two tires and died. No fuse blown...just stopped. After cooling down it wouldn't start so I took it back and got a refund.
I now have a Honda 2000 with a Black and Decker 110 compressor that I've had for about 15-18 years. Its never failed me.

I have the one from Harbor Freight with the alligator clips that connect to the battery. Haven't had any problem airing up the tires to 80 psi. No blown fuses. Unit does get hot though. Don't touch immediately after pressurizing tires.
Also have a 110 volt compressor with a 2-gallon tank that works well but not near as good as the 12-volt one from Harbor Freight. Would I buy another one? You bet!

Gary, what do you mean by a "pressure pro system"?
|
RJI47, The "Pressure Pro System" is a tire pressure monitoring system. Each tire has a transmitter on the valve stem that detects changes in tire pressure on all of your 5er & TV wheels. Each wheel transmitter sends a signal to a monitor in the TV. The monitor runs around $200 + $50 for each transmitter. They are expensive, but can save you damage to your 5er. When tire pressure get low, tire temperature goes up until you have a blowout. When you have a blowout, you could and most likely will have damage to the wheelwell or worse. Hope this helps.

Thank you for the information. Where does one get this system? Is it something I would have installed by the Montana dealer, or something I would install myself.

Real easy to install yourself. After having a system I will never travel without one.
