Slide Topper Question
We have a 2017 Montana 3721. We came home the end of March after being in Florida for 3 months. We made three overnight stops on the way home. Put all the slides out at each stop. Everything was fine. Get home, put the slides out and after some crazy noises the topper awning on one of the slides rips off from the side of the trailer. We bought new material and my son and husband replaced it today. Now the spring stops winding the awning up before the slide is completely in. This causes the awning to fold up instead of winding around the tube. The spring makes all kind of noice when putting the slide in and out. Could the spring be broken?

It sure sounds like a mechanical failure. What brand of topper is it. I'd contact manufacture support. If it's Lippert, you can call them directly. https://support.lci1.com/ That also have a support app. LippertNow

Thank you so much for your help. We have used one of these dealers a few times before. We'll check with them.

I think your spring has some problems too.
Another thought is whether the spring was rewound properly when replacing the topper. I have removed the end of the topper with the spring - carefully and unloading the spring when doing so, to service (inspect and lubricate) the spring. There are a certain number of rotations to the spring to ensure it picks up the material as the slide is brought in. In essence, the spring loads up when the slide is moved out, and then releases the load as the slide is brought in to pick-up the fabric.
But, if there are terrible noises, then there is a spring issue, it could be rubbing inside the housing - clean the housing and lubricate the spring. It could be a broken spring. This video will provide some insights into the removal of the spring cap to inspect the spring. https://youtu.be/s0CMgGyrGKE
Best of luck
