If you can make it around Illinois, you can double tow in Indiana. Folks do it all the time in this state, especially seen around State Recreation Areas that focus on reservoir and large lakes.
About that 300 pound hitch. If your trailer did not come factory equipped with a plug for lights for the second trailer, then it is not designed to tow a trailer. It's designed to carry a light weight cargo carrier, with a total weight hanging on that hitch of 300 pounds.
If you plan on going forward, then by all means, take your camper to a welding business that can install a proper hitch, or strengthen the one you have.
Another "for what it's worth", even if the second trailer has a swivel wheel and is attached to the trailer with 2 receiver hitches instead on just 1, it's still consider a "trailer". If it has a wheel and the wheel touches the ground, it will need to be titled and have it's own license plate as a utility trailer in Indiana. (if you are a resident of Indiana). Yes, legally, in Indiana, even 2 wheel dollies used for towing a toed car behind a motor home is suppose to be plated also (in Indiana).

A Freedom Hauler can be titled as a wheeled tote. When attached to the camper you move the camper plate to the tote.

My experiences
We've owned a couple Montana's which we had a better hitch added to the back. By added I mean welded between the frame rails and gusseted accordingly. Typically we'd tow a 2 place atv trailer but also towed a 5k boat on a tandem trailer from time to time.
We usually double towed in ND / MN / MT / WI; licensed in either ND or MN which both allowed double towing, but with different total length limits (65ft and 75ft).
Didn't have issues either equipment or with the LEO's. The last setup with the boat was excessively long (40ft rv plus a 24ft boat plus a 28ft hdt); it was a pain when you weren't on the interstate.

I haven't double towed, but, my brother does it several times a year when they go to Port Aransas from our area near Fort Worth. He's done it pulling a travel trailer and now he does it with his new fifth wheel. They have a 35 foot fifth wheel and pull a small 10 or 12 foot trailer with their golf cart on it.
