How do they handle wind? Not heavy winds of course, I'd be retracting the awnings.

They are fine in a wind. In fact, they help stabilize the awning in moderate breezes. You stake down the bottom so it acts as a hold down device.

You want the style that has a permanent piece on the awning rail and the main shade zips on or off. The permanent piece rolls up with the awning with no issues. Be sure to get enough drop in the permanent piece (I think they come in 1', 2', and 3' depths) so that the zipper is reachable (without a ladder or step stool). The longer the drop, the more the removable piece is allowed to be staked down further away from the RV and provides a bit more room.

Yep, we have a 9 footer. All the bottom sections are 6’ so we have the 3’ piece that stays on the awning.

I do not have a two piece shade. I have to feed the whole thing through the awning tube whenever I want to use it. A good friend from the Navy gave it to me at the Heber City MOC rally a few years back.
Can’t complain about free.

Same here....Just make sure your roller has a "spare" slot...My new 2021Montana does not have the spare slot to thread a shade awning!!!
