Fun things to do at the Western Region Rally, Dolores Colorado
To get you through the winter and excited about coming to the Western Region rally, I plan to periodically post some ideas on what to do around here (we live in the area). One of these activities will probably be picked up as a group activity; others as something to do on your own while you are here or on the way in/out.
Mesa Verde National Park
There are many monuments in the four corners area dedicated to preserving the Anasazi culture. One of them is Mesa Verde National Park which is ten miles from WestView RV Resort. Mesa Verde National Park was established in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt to preserve these ancient cliff dwellings.
You can read more about Mesa Verde on these web sites.

Thanks Scott for posting fun things to do in the area, and for those going to the rally and see one of these activity we could do as a group and would like to coordinate the event don't hesitate and volunteer.
After the 1st of the year I will be putting up a signup sheet for volunteers to help with the rally. (poker run , baggie breakfast, movie night , potluck , white elephant ,bingo)
Thanks again Scott looking forward to next post .

As of now there is no plan. We are still in planning stage and looking for volunteers to head up excursions like this.
With in the next few weeks I'll be putting signup sheet for volunteers to help with the rally. If your interested in heading this up with the train your more than welcome to do so. Let me know.

I will post information soon. It is up to the wagon master to decide which activity will be selected as a group activity.

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge
Installment 3
Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad
https://www.durangotrain.com/
The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad has been providing service between Durango and Silverton since 1882. It originally hauled freight to the gold and silver mines in the San Juan mountains. Today, it carries passengers through this beautiful area using historic steam locomotives. The 45-mile trip takes three and a half hours, each way, with a two-hour layover in Silverton; a nine-hour trip. There is also a diesel train that is a little faster. The drive from Durango to Silverton is about one hour. There is an option to ride the train one-way and a bus back (bus fare is $25). Or, couples could get together and one couple drive up while the other couple rides the train, then change places in Silverton; avoiding the bus. Either option is recommended; many people find that riding the train one-way is enough.

For those looking to go out some evening, one option is the Bar-D Chuckwagon. It is just north of Durango, about 45 min from RV resort. This is a cowboy style music show and dinner. We attended several years ago and it is pretty good.

For those that might feel like a day road trip, the Dolores-Durango-Silverton-Ouray-Ridgway-Telluride-Dolores loop is fantastic. You will travel the famous Million Dollar Highway (Highway 550) between Durango and Ridgway and Highway 62/145 between Ridgeway and Dolores. The entire loop is about 225 miles and will take six hours driving time not including stops. Of course, you don’t have do the whole thing. Driving to Silverton and back is about 192 miles, four hours. Driving to Telluride and back is 140 miles, three hours.
Any way you go, this will be some of the most beautiful scenery you have ever seen. You till travel over four 10k’+ mountain passes and be surrounded by mountains up to 14k’. In early June the mountains will still be snow covered, but the highways will be fine. Full disclosure; the section between Silverton and Ouray may not be for you if you are afraid of heights. The road is two-lane with impressive drop offs. Having said that, we don’t have a problem driving it. We frequently pull our 5th wheel over the route and I have traveled it many times summer and winter pulling large Snocats.
The entire area is historic Colorado mining country. Silverton has a few tourist shops, but the drive is the best part.
This is big snow country. The last three years (including this year) have been mild, but 2019 was amazing. Highway 550 between Durango and Ridgway was closed for several weeks, CDOT could not keep up with the snow. Here is a helicopter video showing the highway; not the equipment in areas trying to clear the snow.

And one more batch. I couldn't help but throw in the last one. For those that remember Kodiak, this is him roughing it during a late fall trip to Silverton; I think it was about 20 degrees.

I have added some items to post 3. I'm providing links to some things for people to do before or after the rally. No matter which way you arrive/depart, there are some really great things to see. If you plan to camp at any of these places; make your reservations NOW. Also, some activities may still be shut down for covid; especially on Navajo lands.

For those who are new to this area, after rally is a good time to explore the Utah National Parks - Arches, Canyonlands, Bryce, Zion and Capitol Reef. This whole area is rich in natural beauty. And two of our favorites- Monument Valley and Antelope Canyon (those beautiful multicolored photos you often see) are open again. These are both on Navajo lands and were shut down because of Covid. Looking forward to rally and seeing old friends and meeting new.
