We visited the area in Oct 2017 after the national rally. We stayed at the Wellesley Island State Park and loved it. Of course, the crowds in June will be larger than in October when there were only 3 rigs in the entire campground. There is a real nice RV Resort in Alexandria, but it is about three times the cost of Wellesley Island State Park; not that nice.
We took the Uncle Sam boat tour; it was great. Get a tour that stops at the Singer and Boldt castles. The Small Boat Museum is worth a visit and we also took a drive on the Canadian side to see some locks. In October, the place was almost shut down for winter and we only had two or three days. We loved the area and would like to go back.

Yes, what Scottz said. Boldt castle is totally amazing, especially the story behind it. We did not get to see Singer Castle but heard it was also not to be missed.
There are several campgrounds in the area. If you don't mind a bit of a drive the Association Island KOA is awesome. But it's about a 30 - 40 minute drive to Alexandria Bay, NY. There are several campgrounds much closer to AB also. This area is beautiful. I was amazed at the boat traffic, everything from kayaks to 800 foot ocean freighters.

The last time we stayed at Wellesley Island, there was so much goose poop you didn’t know where to step. That was in 2006.
We stayed at 1,000 Islands KOA a few years ago. It’s on the Canadian side. It’s nice. Since we live about an hour from there, I will think about some stuff to see and do. Boldt Castle is a definite must.

If you are interested in going to the Canadian side, the city of Ottawa, Canada's capital is interesting and beautiful. We live about 45 minutes from there, and go there often. In upper New York State, there are lots of things to see around the Adirondaks.

We too also stayed at Association Island KOA and it works for us because we always get a water site where we can put our kayaks in and swim from our site. Alexandria Bay, NY is the place to get a boat tour and they are definitely worth doing. Swan Bay is a new rv park near Alexandria Bay, NY that has an interesting web site. They sent me info when they opened but we have not stayed there. If you are at all interested in antiques wood speed boats the Clayton NY wood boat museum is great and definitely in the area. Clayton had some restaurants that look out on the river and you can watch the boats go by.

Are you looking to boondock or need hookups? There a mix of state parks that offer everything from primitive to water, elec, and sewer. State parks are the least expensive but good luck getting a site over a weekend. Private campgrounds are more pricey but offer much more in amenities. As mentioned, Wellesley Island is nice and offers the gamut. Swan Bay is our favorite but you need to reserve sites quite a while ahead of time. Jacque Cartier is a second favorite and is difficult to get an elec site. Depending on the size of your rig, there are a number of alternatives. We have stayed at the three mentioned and recommend each of them. All three are on the river.

The question was asked three years ago.
