Here in Maryland my Montana is 248 for 2 years. Truck plates are similar to that. No personal property tax or anyting. However in comparison the cost of living here is quite High

There’s always a trade off no matter where you live.

In CA they charge $25 for a smog abatement fee for the first 8 years. Which means you pay this and don't have to do a smog check. As if this fee causes your car to pollute less. Unless you have a diesel pickup. Then you have the pleasure of smog checking your new truck.
One more reason when online shopping I look for out of state companies that don't charge sales tax.

No smog check on diesels in Texas, just gas. $7 I think. Not sure why not checking diesel. Kinda seems backward...but I'm glad.

california registration
Last year I sold my House in SoCal and purchased a house in Lake Havasu. I cut my entire expense load by over 60%. My total insurance is 1200 from 2800. I year registration for my car, truck and RV is less the 1 year on the truck. And the list can go on. After 50 years in SoCal, I needed to go

Have you considered getting a plate in another state
Bought mine in Florida and got a Florida plate for around 50 dollars
Went in a year later to get a Michigan permanent place pay once and done based on weight. Lady told me I needed to pay tax on the purchase. opps I think not I already paid once. I got a renewal from Florida and I filled that out,
Next year I went back and got a permanent plate in Michigan and didn't have to pay the taxes again. cost by weight so i paid 200 and I keep the plate as long as I own the trailer. Do you have a cabin somewhere else where you could register the trailer?
have you got a friend where you can use their address ?

Lived in california for 55 years now live in south Dakota. No state income tax, cheaper registration and insurance. Travel thru there once a year.

NY is still not too bad on vehicles. Truck registration is about $80 for two years and the yearly inspection is $10 (diesels - no smog check while gas vehicles are $21). The RV inspection is $6 and registration is a Jan 1 to Dec 31 cert and is prorated if it's renewed later in the year. Ours at full cost is $167.75, pro rated to last week when I sent it in was $115. Driver's licences went from about $20 for 10 years, now at $65 for 8 years and if you lve near NY City, add another $80 for e metropolitan driving tax.
While these are still within reason, the state has been a fiscal mess for years and other taxes on about everything, including gas and diesel fuel are, I believe, the highest in the country with the exception of California.
We looked at moving to VA a few years ago. Many taxes were much lower but other things taxed brought the dollar outlay pretty well back to what we are paying in NY at that time. Today, wish we could have made the move.

I was feeling pretty bad about my PA. license plate fees going up. I now pay $330 for my truck. The trailer fee is a lifetime plate at $125 paid one time when you get it. It is Non transferable. This plate is only available on trailers over #10,000 lbs gross weight. Semi trailers too.

Yep, In Texas I get the $7 safety look at done and then the sticker. I store our 5er in an open storage lot. The trailer next to me is covered in mildew, etc. with a 2013 plate. I all ways check to see that no one has removed my current plate for their use!

All those Proposition 65 warning labels have to be paid for somehow.
