Gelcoat issue, need advice
My friend just signed papers on a 2014 keystone alpine fifth wheel that was on consignment at a local dealer. Today he want back to look at it and started noticing an issue with the gelcoat on the front curbside. This was not visual the other day when I went and looked at it but when he started touching it, small round pieces of gelcoat starting falling off. Attached are pictures. What could have caused this and should he back out of the deal, have them repair it, or use it to get a higher discount.
Thank you

It looks like someone had or did a shade tree structural/skin repair, tried to be rid of it, and got caught. Why would your friend want to buy something that is already disintegrating before his very eyes? No amount of discount would smooth this issue over for me.

Those look just like voids which used to used to be common in the boat industry especially with Chopped production. It is possible to detect voids as most likely there are more. Moister gets in those voids via pores and that breaks down what ever bond is there. If this was a boat would be a major expense as all void would need to be discovered ground out and repaired then you cannot re-gelcoat you wold need to epoxy or paint. $10K-20K easy assuming more voids.

He just discover Ed this damage yesterday. I went and looked at this camper last week and this was not visual. The dealer did move the camper since then so I’m thinking that the flex of the trailer might have popped them

Walk away! There are way too many used 5ver's out there to buy something with known and obvious issues.

I'd be less concerned about repairing it now, rather than what caused the previous repairs to fail. It might be an underlying issue.

If the papers are signed and the dealership is washing their hands - that's too bad. If you are stuck with this trailer there are some courses of action. Number one, immediately go to the Better Business Bureau and file a complaint. It has worked for me every time. Even if the RV dealership is not a member they will be contacted by the BBB - it will be recorded. Secondly, a good gelcoat repairman should be able to take care of this without difficulty. Also, if the dealer has a FaceBook page you can post a photo and an explanation of the dealership's attitude. Before you try to dump it and take a big loss - look for other solutions, you won't be the first person this happened to. Talk to repair shops.

The dealer gave them the option to bail out no problems, they decided to buy it because they loved the trailer, the dealer took another $2k off and are repairing it

I would recommend they scan the entire 5er for more voides that have not presented yet, That can be easily done either with a hand scanner or an the very least a composite mallet tapping out the sides you will easily here the difference if there are more voids.

Take it to a boat or RV collision center and they can repair it quickly.

Yes but are they repairing only the obvious? what about the likely voids that have not presented yet. All voids need to be discovered ground out, filled with Epoxy then surface painted, this is not an easy or cheap fix to do right.
Bayliner had this problem it damn near bankrupted them and they were the largest Boat manufacture in the world.

My friend is aware. I advised him to walk away but they fell in love with the rig. This is also there first and they are not sure wether they will upgrade to something else after this unit or get out of camping. So his standpoint is he is getting into camping for $30k. He will either like it and trade up to a toyhauler or dump it.
