entry steps
Does everyone but me like the new steps that rise into the doorway. They are rigid but need camper to be set at a suitable height or they won't go down far enough for the doors to work. forgetting them down when setting ;up will bend everything when the level does its thing. I would like to replace them with something like I used to have on older Montana. 3 steps that folded and slid underneath.
Any suggestions anyone?

I have the LCI steps on my older Montana and really like them. Solid with a large top step.
Yes they do require you to be mindful of them when leveling and hooking up. When we are nose high in a camping spot and the steps need more clearance I just dig a little to make them fit. No biggie. Then again I could put the old steps back on and drag them and bend them when I enter and exit steep driveways. Oh well, just one of life's tradeoffs.

Steps
The bottom legs are adjustable. Push the catch pin out and adjust in or out to fit the terrain then put the pin back in. I have to adjust mine all the time

When we bought our new rig we told them that the fold in steps were a deal breaker since we had porches at both our homebases. They called Keystone and got a kit to install the LCI steps we wanted. The connections were still back there and all they had to do was cut the hole in the siding and installed the steps. the kit even came with a gasket to edge the hole.

If, as Dick wrote, the saddle that holds the steps is still there but covered by J wrap, then there is another alternative. The Torklift Glowstep has height adjustment up the wazoo. The top of the steps have three settings (about an inch each), and the bottom step has five 1" individually justifiable legs. Plus they won't extend out into your neighbor at a storage lot. They are solid as a rack when extended.
Who knows, they may now have replacements for your exisitng steps. Check their web site or even give them a call to see what all they have.
There are several of us here who them. It is the best thing I ever did to improve the Montana.

Great news! I'll get busy on that next week. I've seen aluminum 4 step folding steps. I want to check out. The doorway step would make me happier in the landfill.

I'm not a fan of the new steps but for us it's not that big of a deal to switch them out.

We had the MORryde Step Above installed several years ago. And while I really like them, they can present problems if you travel alot. Be careful in an older Interstate Rest Area, if someone pulls in next to you to close, you can't raise them. Or if parked on sand/dirt, yet have a really nice patio that is raised well above ground level you can have an issue.
So I drilled out the rivets between the steps and the mounting hinge and installed pins. Now when we leave our Winter site of 6 months, those steps stay in storage and we use our OEM Fold out Steps during our Summer travels.

I watched the video on the glowstep I like those better than the MorRyde steps. I might switch to those when mine need to be replaced.

I was looking really hard at the fold inside steps as they look much sturdier than the OEM fold ups which are springboards. Then we became full time (right next door to DQDick in NM). Now we have a rather large porch (just ask our neighbor) so the fold insides won't work. It's a trade off any way you look at it.

For all of you who are recommending the glow-steps, if the OP has the entry door behind the rear wheel and the 'suicide step" the glow steps will mount and hang down just as low as the original steps and be damaged just like his original steps were and caused the problem.
I wanted the glow steps on mine but they would have been bent and damaged just like the original ones on steep entry and exits. That is why the LCI in the doorway steps were the only way I could go and probably the only option for the OP.

This is a GREAT idea. Do you have any issues with the joint between the hinge and the steps being loose, since there is slop on the pins?
We actually have a situation where we store our unit that in the winter, we will not be able to fold down the steps. In the summer, I think I can change the angle that it's backed in with, and I could get it in a place that we could put the steps down.
But, if I could make the steps removable, reliably, I could always just back the unit the same way. Then, when we need in, just remove the steps...

There is an adapter for the glow steps for the new design 5th wheels that do not have the original steps hanging under the fifth wheel. It replaces the solid steps and folds inside the doorway just as the solid steps do. I saw it at an RV show, but I can't find it on internet this morning. Might be what you are looking for.

CADman, The holes I drilled are a pretty tight fit on the pins, and since there's two on each side there is very little movement.
And since we don't travel with them, I also drilled on the backside of the inserts for the hand rail, cut two sections of 1" square alum stock to use as spacers and mount my hand rail on the outside.

Thanks for the information!
I was looking at the arrangement today. I think that the pins would probably be ok, even if traveling. Like you said, that's across two plates, so there's good support there.
I actually think in the summer I'll be ok. It's the winters that I won't. I was actually able to get I there today, but needed an outside ladder. Wasn't too bad, though....

My wife and I don't like much either folding them up brings dirt, mud, and other things in the trailer. A lot of time we like to just open the door of the trailer and put supplies inside the door to be put away later. We are getting ready to purchase another new Montana and will ask to have them switched out.

I installed the glow steps several years ago. They are great and like said VERY adjustable to almost any terrain.
