I owned a wheel repair shop for 10 years, and then sold it to one of my employees. We repaired cracked wheels daily with a tig welder. Most of the time, a wheel cracks on the inside lip due to hitting pot holes or road obstructions. Personally, I have welded on thousands of wheels resulting in successful repair. The only place that it's unsafe to weld is on a cracked spoke or where the spoke meets the barrel.
