Mt. Rushmore with dogs
We will be headed out on our last trip of the season next weekend. Mt. Rushmore won out over several choices. We will be staying at Camp Welikit outside Custer for 6 days. We have two small Shih Tzu's and were wondering where you leave the little ones while taking tours or exploring caves? Welikit is dog friendly but we may be gone for 2 or 3 hours if we take a tour? I really don't like leaving them. Alone too long. Suggestions?

We have a Shih Tuz so we know how it goes. Ours can go all night from say 10PM till at least 9AM the next morning. If they don't bark then 3 to 4 hours should no be a problem.

All dogs are different. Our Goldens have tended to be slugs. They can sleep the hours away during the day even though they have slept all night. So several hours away is no problem for us. Smaller dogs tend to be more hyper and may not do as well for as long. But the only way to know for sure is to leave the dogs alone for a while but visit the trailer from the outside to see if you hear them barking. And come back later to see if anything has been "displaced" inside the trailer. A number of times we have had neighbors who leave to sight see and they no more than pull out of the site than their dog(s) start barking. And bark until they return. A good brisk walk to tire them out before leaving can help.

We spent the summer workcamping @ Mt. Rushmore. If time permits, look up the town of Rochford and have a beer and burger at the Moonshine Gulch Saloon.

Rochford is about 1/2 way between Hill City and Deadwood. Off the main road. Summer population is about 25 folks and winter maybe 10. Also see if the Rochford Mall is still open.
Also, if there during the fall, be sure to drive Spearfish Canyon for the turning of the aspens.

We just got back from the UP in Michigan. Some of the sites/cruises were long and took 2 hrs each way to get there.....and I will not leave the pup in the truck when there is heat risk. (Sometimes do but use remote start to run the AC...set an alarm on my phone to restart remotely...or heat in winter...say for lunch or dinner out.)
We left her in the Monty a cpl of times in Michigan for outings...she is crated...she has been from a pup and now expects to use her "little cave" to sleep. We left the fan on "On" with AC set just in case to muffle outside noise and (embarrassed to say) we leave an ipod running with some light jazz playing.
She was fine for 2 days...10 hrs each time.

We get doggie daycare if we are really worried that we will be gone a long time (over 4 to 5 hours) or if there is any chance we might want to be gone longer. It is super easy to take advantage of doggy daycare--they are almost everywhere and easy to find if you google "doggie daycare near me". You will need your shot records. We keep ours in the glove box so that we can't forget it!
It is really important for you to know for sure if your dog is barking while you are gone. When you see rules at parks about "no dogs to be left unattended" I suspect those CG owners have had to field complaints of barking dogs and are tired of dealing with it. (I can testify it can be very frustrating to have a next door neighbor with an incessant barker and be unable to help the dog who is stressed!) But most importantly, if your dog is that anxious, it is almost cruel to subject them to that level of anxiety for hours and hours.
Our dog is (fortunately) NOT a barker. So we feel very comfortable when we do decide to leave her. We try to get her to a dog park and help her get a good play in prior to leaving her home alone. And we often bring her a treat when we return, which seems to please her immensely.
