disk brake upgrade on older Montana
I am considering upgrading and wondering if it is worth the cost? My trailer is a 2005 2955 RL. I love my trailer and will not be getting a new one. What say you?

Disk brakes are well worth the cost of install. There's no comparison in stopping power or the reduced distance needed to stop. Your unit is 16 years old and counting ... I'd weigh how much future towing you expect to do and for how long. It's way cheaper to do the install yourself, but you have to be a bit mechanically inclined and possibly even know how to double flair tubing. Some of the kits out are comprised of rubber brake line hose from one end of your fiver to the other ... I'm not sold on that approach. I prefer hard line. Hydrostar and Titan are both good controllers. You do not need the controller kits with the break-away battery as you already have a battery in your fiver.

The first time we added them to a rig my wife thought it was possibly a waste of money. We had ours installed and about six blocks after leaving the place a woman pulled out in front of us freaked, stopped and froze. Based on previous panic type stops we were both sure we were going right thru her. We stopped about a foot short and our next rig also had disk brakes installed, this time with the wife's insistence.

I'd like to jump on board with this discussion. I see the kits for regular hydraulic disc brake kits for our trailers, and on the new ones you can get them with an electric disc brake kit. Am I reading this correctly that the newer disc brakes are activated electrically and no hydraulics are used? If that is the case, would these newer electric ones be easier to install?

bartman ... post a link to the electric disk brake conversion you speak of. Most current kits are termed as "electric over hydraulic" as in there is an electric 12 VDC motor turning the pump making the pressure.

If you are going to keep the unit forever, go full monty and have the IS and disc brakes done. You will not be disappointed and will more than likely kick yourself in the a-- for not doing it sooner.

Ok so I went with your replies and installed the Kodiak disk brake conversion kit. When I went for my first test drive I looked in the rearview mirror as I was squeezing the manual lever on the controller and all I saw was smoke and skid marks. Obviously I had them set too high. I dialed it back a few notches and now it stops GREAT. I agree it is worth the money.

Hope you didn't flat spot the tires. You will love the stopping power when you get them adjusted correctly

Just curious, what was your total cost?

I paid $2200 which included a new brake controller. The controller I had was not compatible.

Having put IS and disc brakes on our 3160, I can’t imagine not having either. At least several people are alive because of the disc brakes (and I don’t say that lightly). Glad you got them. Enjoy the safety and peace of mind.

Hey Russ, who did you go through for your purchase? Did you have to piece it together or did it come in a complete kit with the controller, brake lines, ect..?

I purchased everything from E-Trailer. They were very good with letting me know everything that I needed.
