Slide toppers vs wind?
Anyone know what wind speed becomes problematic for the slide toppers? Wife asked and my normal "don't worry...it'll be fine" didn't fly #128521;

No direct answer for that. To many variables like wind direction as related to the topper, nearby obstructions and the size of the toppers.

Sitting today in NM with gusts up to 45mph. Have been here with gusts over 60mph. Was in a storm with 90mph maximum wind speed and ours are still on and 5 years old. Always in the sun, summers in Kansas and winters in NM or AZ so good ones will last. My guess is that if I get another year or two I will be replacing them then.

yep depends on direction but in general mine start making a little noise at about 25mph I live on the Ocean and the winds get as high as 70 MPH and YEAH they Make noise enough at 50-70 for me to close the bedroom slide to get to sleep but the toppers are tough and I have had them on all 3 of my Monty's with no problems with tearing or anything like that in High Winds

You never know .We have been in some pretty good wind in Az and New Mexico and have not had a slide topper damaged.

Wind has not bothered mine very much either. I made some pvc supports for mine which installs easy and comes apart very easy also.

Wonderful. I know there are lots of variables and no one is guaranteeing anything...no worries. Just wanted some real world experience. Males sense that it would be pretty high as they are braced on both ends...so if we aren't worried about noise it sounds like a very minor consideration. Thanks everyone!

They will take a lot, but when the noise bothers me, I have a 1" strap that I throw over it to stop the noise.

On mine biggest slide it does get a bit noisy in the wind, but so far on my 2008 3400RL no damage on any of them, and there is four. I think I will follow your advice ,and make up a strap to quiet down the one in the wind.

Mine lasted about six years, The worst wind was 75 miles East of Albuquerque NM. The edges started to tear and I use white gorilla tape lasted another two years. Took them off the end of 2015. Haven't replaced them, We are now on the Coast of Oregon no trees in the park so no problems with twigs or stuff on them. No more noise problems.

I'm a long time sailor. My method for determining if I should roll up some sail (make it smaller) due to wind was to do it when the thought first popped into my head..."wonder if I should roll up that sail a bit." Same rule for the slide toppers...when I start thinking if I should pull them in or not...it's time. Only have done it once...Sante Fe, NM.

Just one other perspective - your noise tolerance. Where we live we frequently get winds above 40 mph. It becomes noisy to us. We had them on our first two Montana's but the dealers in Colorado do not order them with awnings because of wind and snow. So, we went with the suggestion of the dealers out here. Since we have a roof mounted satellite dish, we don't park under trees unless we have to. So far we've been happy. But, it's a personal decision. Just know that if noise bothers you, the toppers probably will if you are in a windy area.

yeah now that we live on the ocean and out in the open with no trees and get high winds all the time (60MPH last night) I wish We did not have them as the noise is crazy loud and last night we had to suck in our bedroom slide to get to sleep,But when we lived under some trees and not on the ocean we loved them

We have had three wind storms with max wind speeds of 98, 94 and 79 mph this winter. The first one blew my brother-in-law's Cougar over onto the retaining wall. Next morning it was upright again. I shudder to think what it would have done to slide toppers. As I said, it all depends upon your circumstances and tolerance to noise. Our first two had them and only lost one (tornado) slide topper awning.

If it is blowing hard enough to blow over an RV slide topper is really not an issue. I don't have them on my 3160 yet but I will put them on in the future. My last Fifthwheel and my camper had them. Wind might make some noise but I never had any damage to the topper.

Might make a "little" Noise I have had them on all three on my Monty's and if you live anywhere with high winds you better think twice ,I love toppers when you are in the woods with lots of trees BUT like if you live Anywhere with consistent high winds and I am telling ya think twice If you want any sleep they get LOUD!!!

This is our second unit with toppers and that reply always worked for me. Louise may not have liked it but... Be aware that if there's freezing rain the water may pool and cause ice.

I've done it twice. Couldn't give you the wind speed, but if it's flapping hard enough to bother you, it's time. I have thought of putting Nerf basketballs or something under the toppers, but haven't done it yet.
First time I had to het on themroof and shovel 6" of snow off of the slides, I figured it was time for toppers. Wouldn't be without them now.
