Remove Battery
Hey all, getting ready to winterize in the next few weeks. We leave it at our seasonal site all year. What are the pros and cons of leaving the battery in place? Central Illinois winters can get pretty cold.

Are you going to have power to it all winter?

If it's not powered, you need to at least have a real battery disconnect or the phantom draws will drain the battery and it will freeze.

I'd say as long as you have a fully charged battery to start with and remove a battery cable to eliminate parasitic drain ... it should hang in there for several months. I think a self discharge rate of 4% per month is an accepted figure. However ... it just doesn't seem a big deal to me to remove the battery and store it in say the garage or shed with a battery tender hooked up over the winter. Your battery(s) will thank you over time.

After it's completely charged, remove at least the positive lead and put a battery tender on it. I've four 6v batteries that stay in the trailer year around, but also have 400 watts of solar that keep them charged. Even if it snows, we've never had any real amount stay on the ground here for more than a couple of weeks, so that's not an issue.

Back in the days when I stored, I always moved batteries to the garage for the winter to get them out of single digit temps.

I leaning towards bringing it home, there will be no power at all to the rig. Water and electricity will be shut off October 24th. Where did the season go?????

Yes, where DID the season go? I am in the process of winterizing as well. We finished our season in Vermont this past weekend. Beautiful, but always bittersweet, knowing this is it for the year. But, to answer your question, I remove my battery and bring it into my workshop. I check the voltage every month or so and hook up a slow charge if it's low. I don't see the point in leaving it outside in the cold winter when it's not going to be used for 6 months.
