Roof leak - update/repaired
We have a 2015 3160RL that has developed a leak. When we get a moderately heavy amount, we have water that drips from the Quiet Cool air return vents in the ceiling. It pools in the bottom of these until there enough to drip out.
I suspect maybe the bolts holding the AC on the roof are not tight enough to compress the gasket and water is running in there? I can't check this out right now, but when I get home on Monday, I plan to pull the AC shroud and have a look.
Has anyone else had something like this happen? This happened one other time in a very heavy, blowing rain, one drop, but that was about 5000 miles ago, maybe the bolts have worked loose?
Thanks
Dave

The bolts probably haven't come loose, but more likely, the foam gasket between the roof surface and the bottom of the A/C has compressed a bit, which is where the water has come from. You will need to remove the plastic panel on the ceiling and tighten the four screws that go up to the A/C unit. We had this happen on our front unit a while back, and since tightening the screws, hasn't leaked since. You should also occasionally remove the shroud on top and clean any debris from the drain holes that allow condensate to drain out the sides on the pan. If your inside panel is like ours, you will need a sharp instrument to remove the two plastic plugs that cover a couple of screws that hold the panel up to the ceiling, the other two are exposed when you remove the filter grill.

This is a Quite Cool unit, so it has no access to the mounting from the inside, no air dump or service access. It's only accessible from the top side after removing the cover.
Anyone had the cover off of their Quiet Cool unit? How exactly is it mounted?
Thanks
Dave

Thanks for the info! I'll tear into it next weekend see what I can find. Sounds like the drain is the first thing to check. Only thing about the drain is that it only leaks when it rains, not when using the AC.

Dave, it would be my guess that the bolts/screws holding the unit down have worked loose some. I think when you take the cover off the unit on the roof you'll be able to check both the drains and the securing devices(LOL)! You guys going to join us in Nebraska City for the CPRR this year? We hope so!

Hi Ron,
It was great to meet up with you guys and the Stroms in Benson in February!
Yep, we'll be at CPRR this year. I need to respond to the meeting thread but haven't yet. I'll do that and make reservations this week.
I'll post what I find out about the leak.
Thanks
Dave

Made it home today and had a look at the air conditioner on the roof. Turns out the gasket had slipped and was allowing water on the roof to run directly into the air return plenum.
When the gasket was originally installed it barely made contact with the roof because of where it was placed on the bottom of the unit. Over time it moved just enough to no longer cover the return plenum hole so it was a direct path for the water draining on the roof into the return air duct.
The fix was a new piece of foam on the front edge of the unit between the bottom of the unit and the roof.
All should be well now. Like they say if you have an RV and you aren't working on it, you should be!
Dave
