Mattress Change
We just picked up our 2008 3400rl and are very anxious to make it our "new" home. Just sold the stick house and close shortly. My question is: at our stick house we have a king bed and our monty came with a queen. The queen measures 78" long and all I can find for the King's are 80" long. It looked like the queen was right up to the dresser when the slide was closed. How would a king fit? I know they sell the king as an option. Has anyone changed their queen to a king and what did you get.

we had a 3400 and put a regular queen in, no problem. We just didn't go with a kind because it was just tighter than we wanted.
note: queen and king are both 80 inches in the non rv world.
no problem putting that king in. http://www.dormia.com/sleepcenter/dimensions.asp

King and Queen are same length. King is wider, only difference. Some folks like Q because it is easier to make up. The OEM King has radius end corners on one end to make it easier to walk around.

Do not look for a California king for the rig because it will be too long (and it's not as wide). This will ensure you get the 80" length. Owners have gotten all kinds of simple mattresses, to sleep numbers, and memory foam. There are lots of options and hopefully you will find something that will provide the comfort you seek in a standard King size.
You might need a new platform too or fasten some extensions onto the existing Queen size platform to fit the mattress. I don't recommend you let your mattress solution hang over any of the sides. Hopefully other MOC do-it-yourselfers will say this is all that's needed.
RV type mattresses typically have radiused corners at the foot of the bed, to provide just a little bit of improved maneuverability. We have a King and while I can see some diffculties making the bed, DW and I have learned to scootch it all the way to one side, pull the sheets, blankets and covers, then slide to the other side and finish things up. If you are used to a King, having one when you convert to full-timing is a plus.

Our 3400 did not need any type of extension to the existing platform for our King mattress. You will definitely need the radius corners due to the vanity location. As mentioned, you need to be careful in making sure the King mattress you buy is specifically an RV type and will be the same length as your existing Queen.

Ours came with a King and I cut the platform down for the queen we put in. If you have a used rig you may find that to be the case with yours.

Where do most of you buy your replacement mattress? We have a king and should have traded to a queen when we bought new. After 3 yrs it is needing replacement.

I put the same king mattress in the Monty that we have at the house. Don't even notice we are in a different bed. This was the very first thing we changed in the trailer. Never even slept a single night on the factory king mattress. The mattress we put in does not have the corners cut like the one that was in there but that has not been a problem with slide closed. Now you can not walk between the bed & dresser with the slide closed but for us that has not been an issue. Even for a quick overnight lay over we will open the bed room slide even if you do not open the rest.

When we got our Monty (used) the first thing we did was get rid of the king, cut down the base and put in a queen memory foam mattress. We bought the new one through overstock.com and saved a bunch. Two years now and we still love the mattress. If I remember right, it was $300 something - considerably less than a tempurpedic.

Gorgeguy, did you have any issues or snags cutting the platform to queen size. I'm in the process of converting the current RV king to a standard queen in my 3400RL.

I bought an RV king from Parklane mattress in Tualatin Or. We really like it compared to the ‘premium’ Lippert one it came with.

Our High Country 305RL came with a coil spring King mattress. When we replaced it with a 10" memory foam mattress with cool gel insert (Walmart $350) we found the base was only wide enough for a queen. Went to Home Depot and bought two sheets of 4' x 8' birch (smooth finish) and created our own base. The mattress just fits under the "night stand" shelves and its a little tight when making the bed but many times better than the original.

We replaced our mattress (of only a few months) with the Brentwood RV King from Amazon ($700). We are extremely happy with it. Best mattress I have ever slept on. The mattress is 13" thick, and the night stands are 11" off the base of the bed. I squeeze the mattress in under them and it seems to work fine.
We would rather have the extra room in the bed than on the floor, so we have no intentions of cutting the bed down.

Very easy to do. Measure twice and cut once.

It does not have to be specifically for RV. As long as it is a standard king size. As someone mentioned king and queen are the same length

RV manufacturers often have their own dimensions for mattresses. Just measure the platform length (while the slide is closed) and the width.
When we bought the current 5er, part of the deal was to swap the trade unit's almost new Simmons Beauturest with the very puny new one. I also cut the platform height as the Simmons mattress was 5" thicker and I kept banging my head on the slide ceiling.

We drove the 2013 3402 home from the dealer removed the high quality OEM mattress and donated it to our local community care.We had a sleep number ready to install. The mattress in our 06 3400 lasted I think one trip and was replaced with the aforementioned sleep number.
