Unusual tow vehicle
I spotted this unusual tow vehicle in the parking lot of our local truck stop. Real nice. No worries about weight limits.

Looks like his hitch is a foot and a half behind is rear axle. I wonder if he has more trailer sway like a bumper pull trailer.

I think the power, weight and strength of a semitruck cab allows the hitch to be mounted in the rear. If you look at RickW's picture, he has the same relative position for his fiver.
In the original post that is one nicely restored truck! It "almost" looks like the sig picture for the original post too, well maybe not. I'm humored that the old Mack is towing an Outback trailer as this Keystone model is considered a lightweight RV and that restored truck looks like it can not only tow lots bigger, with that generator it can probably power a couple of RVs, too!

Most likely this guy is in to antique trucks. So the truck came before the 5th wheel not because he felt he needed more truck for his trailer. If you ever see photos of antique truck shows it is not unusual to see them pulling a small 5th wheel or bumper pull RV.
I added 6' of frame to the original frame of the truck. The air ride hitch is installed as far back as I could install it. I get zero trailer sway. I can drive in a strong cross wind and barley notice (except for fuel consumption). Keep in mind my truck weighed 18k# before I built the bed (all 1/2" plate & 4" C channels) or load the Jeep. The hitch that far back also provides a better pivot point for backing in to tight spots. Also the trailer follows the path of the truck closer and does not cut corners as tight.

RickW, just curious, how long are you bumper to bumper? Is your HDT hydro or air? Is the truck with the mods over 26K?
I like the set-up, something similar we thought about during our build.

I am in the 70'~72' range. I am shorter than the same tractor pulling a 53' van by a about 5'. I am full air, even the front axle is air and not springs. I have not weighed the truck since we built the bed. We only figure about 2k#~2.5k# for the bed. So the truck is under 26k#. With Jeep & trailer loaded I figure I am in the 40k# range combined. I need to scale it to make sure.
I followed your built when Wayland was working on it. Very nice setup!

Boy, that brings back old memories! My Dad was a truck driver back in the day when driving a truck was work. He had a 1961 model B-61 very similar to this. He actually drove it with his left arm looped thru the steering wheel most of the time because, it had 2 transmissions. That meant it had 2 gear shift levers. I don't remember how many gears it had but, I recall that one tranny was in front of the other. Was a real work horse back in the day. I'd bet that our diesels we drive today in our pick-ups have more power than semi tractors had back then. Still, one of them old things would be fun to drive.

Your set-up is impressive with the Jeep sitting up there. We did think about going the HDT route but after doing all the figures with taxes, registrations, and insurance here in the lovely Garden State the new MDT was a better fit.
We were able to keep the truck and trailer around 63' even with the new Monty so it is not to bad. Backing up into the drive way is always an adventure depending on where the neighbors park their cars on the street. Funny thing is they bust my chops with the truck and trailer in the driveway but they have all their cars in the street and their driveways are empty!! Go figure!
I can imagine what Wayland would do with that Mack!

Taking Bigboomer grocery shopping is not to big a problem as long as your not in Carlisle, PA in the Walmart lot where they will give you a $15 ticket everytime. One of the few Wally World lots where you cannot boondock.

Thank you! We looked hard at MDT but in the end felt that we would get the most bang for the buck going the HDT route. Living in Texas we only had to pay taxes on the purchase. No personal property taxes.

My driveway is alley access only. So I pull the truck down the alley and back it in to my driveway. Luckily my driveway is 3 car wide. The nose of the truck is 12" off the alley. Tight fit but I feel that if I left the truck in storage with the Monty I might not have any Diesel in the tanks next time I go to start it.
My neighbor is the same way. Driveway empty and all 3 cars out front in the street.
