Ak traveler, we just paid $3.319 here in Skagway, which is probably higher than most of Alaska. But we bought diesel here and now as it can only get worse a few days from now when we're ready to drive again. At least that's our thinking. We're even considering the marine highway down to Prince Rupert to see how it compares to driving costs.

Judy,
I hope your sitting down when you check the cost of the Marine Highway to Prince Ruppert. We did it from Prince Ruppert to Haines in 1998 with a Lance camper. As I recall a little over $900.00 and we were just barely under the 25' flat rate length limit.
It was a beautiful trip and the drive from Prince Ruppert back to Prince George BC was as well. As I recall it only cut about 500 miles off the road trip.

We did check out the prices in Skagway yesterday and decided not to take that route. You're correct, Don, it doesn't cut off that much mileage and with the length of our rig would cost just under $2500.00. Glen shifted the numbers around last night and we're going to stick with our original plan to drive down the Cassiar hwy. We may never make this trip again and the Cassiar will be a slow but beautiful trip, from what I've read.

Those of us who are still in stick houses will also be having to budget additional for the cost of heating as we head into the winter season. A double whammy on energy costs will be difficult to bear for many--but in light of Katrina's impact down south, we are feeling fortunate to have a house to worry about. We join those who hope that the gov't will be able to prevent price gouging. Unfortunately, we have also to take into account the fact that world energy resources are being heavily tapped by huge countries like India and China whose energy needs are exploding. We may be betweeen a rock and a hard place.

I filled up this morning in Gainesville, Texas for 2.56 diesel. Others stations including WalMart were 2.64 with a few at 2.76. I guess we will all feel the pinch soon.

An update from my neck of the woods, if you will. There are two gas stations near my school. At 5 p.m. yesterday, one was at 2.69 and the other was at 2.99. As I came to work this morning at 6:40, the one at 2.99 was the same, but all of the pumps had bags over them--the tanks were dry. The station down the street that had been 2.69 yesterday was then 3.49.
Now a thinking person has to wonder at that jump...

San Marcos, CA: Diesel was $2.95 on Tuesday; topped off this morning...$3.25. Just think what this will do to each and every item we purchase---farmers pay more for fuel, truckers pay more for fuel, railroads & ocean freighters pay more for fuel, manufacturing industries will pay more for electricity as costs for fossil fuel increases for the generating plants, petro-chemical items such as tires, plastics etc. will rise...its a spiral "headin' north". Bet wages and retirement pensions won't keep up with the increases in costs.

This morning in North Texas most of the gas was 2.89. Diesel was 2.76 is most places. A couple of stations posted regular at 2.99.
Think what this is doing to the farmers. Tractors don't get good mileage.
(Joke: City dude bragging about his new car. Farmer says"I have a combine that I paid 80 thousand for and only drive it a couple of weeks each year."
We haven't been blown away or flooded yet. Put it all in perspective.
