Mooter; The thought occurred to me that there are a couple people on here, like fire trucker (Bob Grissom) that have 400 or 435 HP engines. They develope about 1450 lb. ft. of torque at 1350 RPM. You try to climb Wolf Creek Pass with them and your engine will be dripping out the exhaust pipe.

Tell me more about Wolf Creek Pass. I've heard it's a beautiful drive but steep but have never heard a percentage. I've easily pulled long eight percenters but is this one more than that? In late October we'll be towing from Minden, NV, to Kansas City and are thinking of taking a leisurely route through the southern part of Colorado. One route I marked would include Wolf Creek Pass. So I'm interested in hearing more. Also, the weather forecasts may dictate we take a more southerly route or stick to I-70 across Colorado. We've done I-70 a couple of times and I prefer to take new routes each trip. Would appreciate comments and experiences with Wolf Creek Pass. Thanks.

Steve; We've been over Wolf Creek a couple years ago going from Durango, CO to Dodge City, KS. It is a very good ride. There was some construction at that time but I'd imagine it's done by now. I've put a site on for you to check out. Tops at 10850 ft.

Thanks, Bob. That looks like a beautiful drive. I hope the weather holds so we can take that route. Someday I'd like to spend some time in the Durango area and general SW CO area but for now we'll have to be content with passing through.

Steve Reigle; I forgot to mention; If you're approaching Wolf Creek Pass from the east, you only have to climb 2370'. South Fork is already at 8480' elev. From the west, Pagosa Springs is at 7079' so it's really no task at all.

Thanks, Bob. We'll be coming from the west, from around Durango. I wasn't too worried about climbing the pass. We did great on I-70 west to east up Vail Pass and up to the Eisenhower Tunnel at something around 11,000 feet or thereabouts. With recent fuel prices I'm more concerned about sucking dollars down the tank while climbing those 8 percenters. In any case it's nice to know what you're dealing with. Thanks for all the info. It helps. I like to have an idea of what I'm attempting before I get to the point of no return and Wolf Creek Pass has a reputation of being a tough climb. Apparently that's east to west, though.

Some folks in a Montana pulled into this park yesterday. They're from near Durango. They tell me we will not likely have weather problems driving that area in mid- to late-October. I hope the weather holds. We'd really like to take that route back to Kansas City from here (Minden/Carson City, NV).
