Hot Water Electric Element burnt out?
My hotwater tank won't work using electric but will work on gas. I figure I must have turned on the electric before the hot water tank was filled and the element burned out. How difficult is it to change the element. Is it worth changing it or just keep using gas? We have the 10 gallon hotwater tank.

We have the same problem. A new element from CW is $23, and I figure should be as easy to replace as the anode rod.
Good luck.

Bob did exactly what you described and had to replace the heating element. He had to buy a new socket to fit, but otherwise said it was a simple job. Take the old one out, put the new one in, fill tank before turning on!

2 obvious questions, just in case...did you check and reset the circuit breaker, and did you check that the electric switch outside, at the heater itself, was on? Could save you a few $$. Sorry if this is too obvious, but you never know..

Glad to know it is a fairly simple fix! I believe I am going to have to do this in the near future as the previous owner must have also flipped on the water heater dry.
We have been using gas so far, but it does need to be fixed.

Thanks for replys, it sounds too easy to fix. I think this happened when I replaced the annode rod and all the water was running out because I was trying to flush out all the annode decay but had the trailer hooked up to 120volt as I was doing it. Next time I will know better than leaving the hot water tank on when draing it. Thanks again.

On my previous trailer I forgot to turn off the electric one time and it ran dry. I may have got lucky, but all I had to do was push the two black buttones on the outside of the hot water heater marked "reset" and it worked from then on. May want to check that before replacing any parts. I think that is what "patodonn" is refering to above.

Re the "reset" buttons outside, I had forgotten about those. Good point!

Just a note that the heater element is "hidden" behind a black plastic cover that needs to be removed first. The socket or wrench to fit the element is the same one that will work on a household electric hot water heater, so you or a friend might have one of those on hand.

The socket is called a Flange Wrench, about $5-7 at a hardware store. Usually you can also buy a replacement element there for about $12. I've done this twice so now I have all the tools and spare.
