Mail
We just completed our first year in the Monty and spent 9+ weeks on a trip this fall. Our mail carrier agreed to hold our mail even though the "official USPO" policy is to hold for only 30 days. When my wife went to get the mail, the USPO official chewed her out for not picking it up sooner. SO--we plan on a 4+ month trip to Alaska next summer. Short of forwarding to a relative out of town, has anyone used other methods? We pay all our bills electronically--so we don't really need to have the mail forwarded to us as we travel.

Tim and Susan
We have a large P O Box and have our daughter pick it up once or twice a week and through it in a box.
We have mail order prescriptions and she priorty mails them to us when we are parked for a week or more.
Works for us, but not for everyone.

We use a mail forwarding service. Yes it cost $$, but we have an address which we can use for everything and not have to depend on family or friends. We use Mail Call USA which has many locations depending on the state you are using for your domicile. We do have a P.O. Box where our summer home is located and we have all our mail held for long (much more than 30 days) periods of time. This is a small town, but have never heard the 30 day limit thing on holding mail. Last time we went back we had two of those post office crates full...mostly junk mail which we just tossed. We have all our bills on direct pay with the exception of our MasterCard because we like to look at the charges before paying. We also have all our retirement checks on direct deposit. This works for us.

We run into the 30 day post office limit every time we go away. Our post office is very strict about it. Plus we "lost" some packages that came while we were gone. We actually plan some of our trips on this 30 day limit. Full timing coming up and won't have to worry about that any more. We plan on using the So. Dakota full timers services.
Happy trails............................................ ...

We use a box at our UPS store. It gives a street address and they will either hold or forward it anytime that we call. We had problems with the USPS so we have our mail delivered here when we are at home too. $20 a month and no worries now.

It takes a bit to understand and make sure you do the proper forms but the USPS will forward all your 1st and 2nd class mail.
www.USPS.com as with I think all mail services there is a 1 week to 10 lag lag between forwarding addresses..but you can make it work. You can now do all of this on line. If you are long timing check out the USPS before you spend $ you may not have to spend.. I have to say the the mail thing is the hardest part of the long timing thing..You can cut way down on paper mail by requesting "paperless billing" via E-mail We have no paper bills coming to the house now. You can do Income tax on line and pay proptery tax on line.

We are also greatful for this part of the forum; this is the lifestyle we are attracted to. We really like to be on the road in the Montana for a month or two, but like to have a place to come home to. I am a woodworker and a glass artist and don't want to give that up, so we maintain a home in East TN where my wood shop is and one in SW VA where my glass studio is. We've been doing this for a while, so we're used living in more than one place. We use one of the "private mail box" stores (like the UPS store). They will forward our mail whenever and wherever we want them to. It just takes a phone call. If we're going to be in one place for a while, we just ask them to send it there, if the campground will agree. If not, we just look for another UPS store, or similar business. We pay all of our bills online so there isn't anything urgent in the mail anyway. It sometimes takes a little coordination to make it happen smoothy, but that's just part of the adventure.
