Guess I've had bad luck with aluminum wheels. With that good old Michigan road salt, every vehicle I've ever had with aluminum wheels had a problem with discoloring/corrosion under the clear coat after a period of time. The Monty's doing the same thing.
Don't get me started on the cheesy chrome lug nuts that came with my aluminum wheels. Talk about junk.
Sorry folks. I like my Monty and don't mean to gripe, however, there's no way I'd pay $600 for the upgrade if I had it to do over again.

Seems to be a two sided camp here. Democrate, Republican, Ford vs Chevy and I am not a specialist on either side. I will say this, I have the Alum rims and I had to put the spare on which is a steel rim while I had the one wheel flat fixed. So on one side of the trailer for a short period of time, I had the Alum and Steel rim. I think I am going to go on the looks side of this discussion. Man there was a big difference and I couldn't wait to get that spare off and the Alum Wheel put back on.

I I followed the link but find no prices. I emailed Lonnie, maybe he can give us some specifics. I've been wanting to give myself a little cushion (I'm not at gross) but I figure a couple extra hundred pounds cushion sure couldn't hurt, especially the way our roads are becoming!!.

Skypilot,
I just looked it up and the 16X7 HD is still an 8-lug wheel if we are looking in the same place on Series 3.
16x7 HD 8x6.5 4.90 3960 lbs @ 110 PSI -8mm JJ 23 lbs
HWT will only sell to the trailer manufacturers, but the second link I posted is a distributer with pricing.

In case any might be interested, I have attached below a photo of the hubcaps I have installed on my 3400. The current lowest price I have seen on the Internet is $35.00 for a set of 4.
The mud flaps were also an addition to the Monty.

Skypilot,
I'm not avoiding the question, just didn't recieve your e-mail. I just now read that you sent one. I'm really pressed for time, but as SOON as I can I'll check out the availability of the wheels, however, Brad has done extensive research on this matter, as he had some wheel problems in the past. He probably knows more about it than I do at this point.

On my last RV (Keystone Laredo 5th wheel) I had painted slotted steel wheels that began to rust. I found out that this rusting could weaken the wheels considerably and not safe to use. My new Montana 336RLT also has steel wheels, and I am looking to swap them for aluminium wheels soon. The aluminium wheels of today are much more solid and durable than earlier ones and in my opinion, they not only look good, they are lighter than the steel wheels, and will not rust. Any good place to buy wheels in SC? We're leaving this cold behind (NNY) and heading where it's warmer right after X-Mas.
Giddyup!

Rich,
Do a google search on "Drive Accessories kt317 wheel covers". The typical photos do no exactly show what the covers look like. As can be seen by my actual photo, the center is chrome, along with chrome bolts, and the outside rim is chrome. The entire cover is plastic.
As I mentioned sometime back, I actually purchased mine at PEP Boys, but I recall you saying they were not in your area.

We bought ours with the standard steel wheels. The dealer advised us that we could buy aluminum wheels ourselves a lot cheaper than what they would cost as an option. I bought black lug nut covers from the axle manufacturer (Dexter)and they look pretty good with the black hub covers that came as standard. I will admit that they do not look as good as the aluminum wheels. I think I agree with the member who said that he preferred the steel wheels for their strength. I have aluminum wheels on four other vehicles that other family members drive, and most have some dings from curbs jumping out in front of them. Due to the likelyhood that the wheels on the Montana will come in contact with a curb at some point, and the side stresses incurred during turns, I'll probably stick with the steel wheels for now. Maybe some chrome steel wheels in the future.....

Brad: I just looked again (had the page saved) and the specs say 6 lug however, no one around here has them or can get them/ etc.... Lonnie also emailed me back and he had no luck either. Our local Goodyear dealer as well as a local independent shop looked earlier as well -- nothing. So, at this point my wife and I are looking at upgrading axles, hubs, etc.. to 8 lug -- also going to go disk brake at that time I think (as someone said earlier - its only money!!! )
Back on topic -- have had steel wheels and now have aluminum - if I have a choice I will never go back to steel again -- looks so much better; easier to maintain in the long run as well.

Skypilot - I've searched that link again, and I'm just not finding it. The first column is the rim diameter and width, the second column is the number of lugs and lug span, i.e. (6 lug X 5.5") OR (8 lug X 6.5"). Keep in mind I wear progressive tri-focals, so I'm not saying it's not there, just I may not be seeing it. !
I went down the same road you are headed - starting looking at high pressure wheels, 8 lug Dexter axles, disc brakes, even retrofit of the More-Ryde LRE shackles system. It would have been a nice setup, but after all of the research and trying to find someone to do the work, I chose to pick up the phone and order a new Monty.
Remember - nothing needs to change if you stay with your Load E LT or Load D ST tires - it would save you a lot of money and you could still have the alloys.
Brad
PS - Watch the offset on those wheels! A 0 or - offset is fine. A +8mm offset brings the wheels in and very close to the shock towers. I had to have some shackle and spring hanger straightening done to bring it back to true to keep the right rear tire from rubbing on the tower when in a turn.

Brad: I stand corrected -- went back to the source; when I printed the page I was running low on ink (has to be some excuse beside these OLD eyes needing help ), ie. very faint and we all read it as 6 by whatever. I'm surprised one of the two dealers here in town didn't call me on it earlier -- they both wrote down the company name and specs from the sheet; oh well. .
Too soon to trade again so have to keep this one for awhile.
Thanks again to all. A GREAT holiday season to everyone.

Skypilot -
As I ended up buying the G-rated tires on the road in Utah - and couldn't get wheels to take the pressure, I ended up with the 85psi wheels and just inflated to 85psi. Per the tire manufacturer load/psi chart, I was fine running the tires at 85 psi for the given load on them. No early signs of wear or heat before I traded in.
Happy holidays to you as well. I sent Santa the phone numbers and web links to all my favorite Monty goodies! hahahah- With a new Monty being delivered for Christmas, I'll expect just get a new tie. ahhh but the list is sooooo long!
