Unload cabinets before moving?
We are full timers for almost 2 years now, but we have not been moving around. That's going to change and we are going to hit the road as much as possible. We are currently in CO, and we will be going through WY, a couple of month stop in ID, then down to AZ for around 4 months this winter.
My questions is what advise you give us about traveling with stuff in the cabinets, or to unload the stuff into totes and put them on the floor. I am on the side of a little prevention saves a lot of time and $$$ on repairs later. The wife thinks it won't be much of a problem.
Any input will be appreciated from those of you with experience.
Thanks

Everything in a cabinet stays in a cabinet when we move. We do use Velcro straps to keep doors from opening. Things may move around but as long as the doors don't open there are no problems.
Be careful when opening cabinets once you arrive to avoid contents falling out, particularly if you gave been traveling rough roads (which is about all of them these days),

We line the cabinets with the non slip shelf liner and cut to size for plates and dishes and use spring bars in open cabinets.
We've logged over 100K miles and haven't broken a dish or glass (most glasses aren't glass).

If you have a rear kitchen camper you can unload them while traveling. I’ve done it twice. Once I saved one coffee cup. If you have a mid kitchen camper I don’t think there is anything to worry about. I’ve never had any move in the cabinets.

After reading of so many cabinets falling down, we only put the very lightest things in them.

Always travel with them full. Velcro to hold the doors shut, tension rods on some shelves, beach balls partially blown up on some dishes and strong magnets to hold the frig door shut.

We have traveled about 122,000 miles over 15 years. We leave everything in the cabinets. We have a middle kitchen. Our dishes are on rubber things to stop them from moving around. I don't think we have had any breakables fall out. A couple of things in the back cabinet like paper plates or chips, etc fell out. Going into Alaska 5, count them, 5 doors fell open. Just some packages to put back and nothing broken.

Everything stays in the cabinets. The 'real' glasses are put in the original shipping cartons and towels cushion the dish cabinet and bungee cords keep the doors closed. Been doing it that way for over 40 years and don't recall that we have ever had a broken dish calamity. This includes a popup as well as a truck slide in camper and well in excess of 100K travel miles

Thanks for the advise.
We don't use any "breakable" dish-ware, I was more concerned with the weight in the cabinets. I think that it makes sense to have the heavier stuff (canned goods, etc..) unloaded and put low, but the lighter stuff can stay.
I planned to use straps for the cabinet doors, tv's, and fridge, and I appreciate the advise shared there.
I have heard of cabinets falling off while traveling when loaded since rolling down the road is a rather large earthquake lasting several hours.
I guess I will put this concern behind me.
Thanks again.

Ours stay loaded. We have glass and everything else that goes in a camper. I just make sure anything that would tend to roll is packed accordingly.

I have no glass dishes. Glass is heavy so i don't use them. I have opened my cabinet door and got a surprise a couple times. LOL Plastic is king when RVing. However my coffee cups are glass and I only have 2. They go in a special spot so they don't move around. i have packed my food cabinet full and had to do a major repair. Never have a shelf fail again. Same with a couple drawers. Wood glue is your friend.

Kitchen cabinets have small baskets for holding cans, seasonings, boxed food items. We have small baskets for wash cloths in the bathroom (just to keep them together). We have a couple small containers with lids in the cabinet above the bed for small items (like you'd throw in a junk drawer at home. Other than that, everything else, like dishes, cups, stuff like that ride just fine when traveling. We do have child proof locks (snaps and catches) on our cabinet doors, and one cabinet is secured with small bungee cords to keep the doors from coming open when in transit.
The other thing we do is in the refrigerator. When we first got the camper, I purchased 3 adjustable shower curtain rods and use them across each shelf in the refrigerator to keep things from falling and jumping out when opening the doors. I got shorter ones and got them in white so they would match the interior of the refrigerator. They are just tension rods: From WalMart here.

Here is one example. Things pretty much stay in tact except for the roughest of conditions. Then we may get a couple that lean over. A rear kitchen would be a different story. Those cabinets are at the end of the whip and stuff goes flying and should be stowed like on a boat.

That would be an extreme condition! Like rolling down highway 99 in CA.

Everything stays in the drawers, cabinets and closets, except the wine in the rack above the cooktop is stored low in an ottoman. We keep a complete set of clothes on the fifth wheel trailer so we never have bring clothes when we travel.

Use can use garden stakes as well - they come in 3' to 5' lengths and work well for drawers and side by side cabinets...and are very light!!!

your question is a first. we leave everything in the cabinets, why not?
we make sure the cabinets are shut firmly and life goes on.
