Magic Chef Stove Top Igniter

I'm having trouble with the stove top igniter on our Magic Chef stove. The knob began to turn on the shaft without activating the igniter. The igniter works well if I remove the knob and insert a screwdriver in the shaft slot and turn it. Bought a new knob. It worked for a very short time then began to turn on the shaft without turning the igniter shaft--just like the old one. Anyone have this problem & what did you do about it? Thanks.
