Help with route to Bryce Canyon National Park

We are leaving for Bryce on May 2nd from Southern CA..
We are considering going I-15 to Hwy 14 near Cedar City UT, to Hwy 89N to Hwy 12 E. What say you seasoned travelers? What about elevation, windy roads, possible chains needed?

Thanks for your help
