Model Numbers - Know what they stand for?
I've been told many different stories about how to decifer model numbers of these trailers. Does anyone know for sure? For mine, I was told that the 400 in the 3400RL stands for 400 sq ft with rear living room. I could never find out what the 3 stood for. I'd be interested to find out the real definitions for the model numbers.

There really isn't any rhyme or reason to the numbers. A long time ago model numbers indicated the length of the rig. In fact when the 3400 first came out, the specs listed it at 34' when it is really 37+'. We had a 32xx Tahoe that was 32' but that was a while back. Since 400 sq.ft. is the max in many places then that wouldn't hold for the 3500 and so on.

They are floor plan identifiers. The guide at a factory tour [Montana] was asked that and that was essentially his answer.

Don't think they mean much of anything. Our 3400 has been listed at 37.8 and 38.3 but it is actually 39.1 long.Even our Terry of 10 years ago was a 29R but was 32.6 long. They are just model numbers.

Sue's got it right as far as what they USED to be. Our previous TT and this one both held true to the length rule (measured to the front of the tongue. I think fifth wheels may have been measured to where the back of the truck would be theorectically. In other words the 3400 might have measured 38 but would have only added 34 feet to the length of your tow vehicle. They probably just gave up since there are long beds, short beds, different kinds of hitches placed in different areas of the bed.

According to Jeff Rank (until last year VP of Montana) the model NUMBER means absolutely nothing. It is a NUMBER and that is all it is. The NUMBERS have nothing to do with length or square feet of anything.
The letters stand for..RL-Rear Livingroom, RK-Rear Kitchen, SA-Side Aisle, FL Front Livingroom

So, 3500 is 500 square feet with slides open, and, the 3650 would be 650 square feet with slides open - - - - - -
Color me confused , as I thought the largest one of our rigs could be is 400 square feet.

I agree, Carol, and if you look at the floor plans, there is no way either of those models would be more sq. ft. than the 4 slide 3400, same maybe but not more. Perhaps Charles was just trying to wade through all the questions. And since he didn't respond to many of us, I'm not going to put a lot of confidence in what he says.

There is a reason for all that sawdust, ,
So you clean those light fixtures!
Sorry, , I had to giggle, prior unit owned for close to 15 years, left the yard to new owner with sawdust in the light fixtures, and yes, I cleaned them at least once a year. Unit prior to that, ditto, was at least 10 years old when we sold and it had saw dust too!
After plant tours, we figure we will always have sawdust in the light fixtures, so, we clean out the sawdust and the dead flies and smile, cause we have a unit to clean. Beats the alternative, no unit to clean and use.
Don't get me wrong, we have suffered through a long long list of quality control issues, but we don't consider the sawdust to be one of them. Our take.

Think about all those folks with 2950's, 2975's, or 2980's.

Here is another theory that could make sense - the model number is the actual living area distance from the inside of the back wall to the bedroom closet doors. I have a 3075 - 30 3/4 feet of actual living space but overall around 34' (Adding the closet depth, pin and rear cap)
Seems to make sense to me but then maybe they are really just numbers!

The last three numbers being square footage may sometimes be the case but it's not a hard and fast rule. It can't be. The largest an RV can be is 400 square feet. 401 is a Mobile Home and subject to totally different construction standards. My understanding is the model number is just a number, as others said above. But I do not know that for sure. I do know the 3400RL and 3500RL both are 400 square feet, according a a Keystone executive.

If 400 square feet denotes travel trailer vs mobile home, where do park models fit in... or, are they lumped into mobile homes.
