In the hunt
Hello! DW and I are looking forward to beginning full timing within the coming year. We've been camping sporadically over the past 4 years, towing our TT with our Suburban. We plan to move up to a 5th wheel for full timing, and Montana is in the mix for consideration. There must be a good reason why I see so many Montanas on the road!
We've heard a lot of advice about the advantages of buying used, so we may go that route. Of course, we'll also need a tow vehicle, also probably used. Hoping to go all in for around $100K. Does that sound reasonable?
We've also heard that full timing voids some warranties. Does that apply to Montana? Or does it make any difference after the first year, since most warranties are only for 1year?
Looking forward to lots of good reading in this forum!

If you google a Montana floor plan you like, you will most likely find it new some where for something in the mid $60k's. So there is no reason you should not be able to find a 2-3 yr old rig for $50k or less.
And a new 350/3500 diesel without all the high end trim and bells and whistles can be had for $50k or less. Or a fairly new one with all those extras for a similar price. So with some careful shopping you should be able to get into a new or almost new combo for that $100k range.

If you buy used (more than a year old) the manufacturers warranty is up anyway. Not an issue on a new one with Keystone they fixed several things for us helping us find a dealer near us because they knew we were full time. Depending on time of year and situations on stock your budget should be good. We were under that with both TV and rig being new mostly because we bought the monty in 2011 when the 2012's were being built and it was a discontinued model from 2010. We are Montana fans and our rig has served us well. As a full timer with some experience I would only advise that whatever rig you buy make sure there is plenty of storage space.

Full timing in a new Montana will not void your warranty and many members on this forum have done just that.
After having several Montana models over the years we just recently ordered yet another.

I am on my 3rd Monty a 2004,2012 and my 2015 and have full timed in every one of them with very little issues and on all three the Dealer never asked and I don't tell if I'm full timing ote] Originally posted by DarMar

Good call. I bought mine 3 years old and there are definitely advantages going that route, financially and otherwise. Just make sure you know the market and what to look for.
The idea of buying from a member here sounds like solid advice to me.

Good luck with your search. You already found the number one advantage of buying a Montana, new or used. The MOC is a valuable resource. Any problem you might have, someone else has had and you will get lots of helpful hints. Best of luck.

I went very used but I would say if you go used inspect and then inspect some more. Good luck.

The only disadvantage to used is it's sometimes hard to find the floor-plan that you want especially after looking at new ones that your wife falls in love with. You can certainly save thousands of dollars as these things depreciate like most recreational wants. Be patient and you will find what you like. There are a lot of people that sell because of health problems. Good Luck with the hunt.
