Losing Antifreeze out of DeGass
Just had coolent system flushed and refilld. Pulled from Green Bay to St Paul Minn lost some fluid. I asked the dealer to check cap to make sure it was OK and holding pressure he just said the gasket looks fine and that if I am losing fluid it is a head gasket. that just doesn't sound wright. The truck is a 2005 F350 with 80000 miles. In May had compression test and no problems.
Thanks for the help
Bill

Ford has had problems with gaskets, My neighbour in Yuma had to have his replaced on his 06 Ford. There is a dye that can check if they arre leaking. If it a slight leak it might not be that obious(sp), and with 80,000 might want to skirt the issue

Did you check to see if they overfilled it?

It could be the EGR valve. but most likely it's the head gasket. Ford had a real problem with the head gaskets on their 6l engines. the head bolts were too small and this allowed the heads to lift and blow the gaskets. You had it refiled there could have been air in the system and allowed the coolant level to go down in the bottle. Is there any coolant stains under the hood? This would indicate coolant was escaping from the degas bottle. That would indicate the head gaskets. We hope its not the head bolts. Keep us informed.

As stated above it is possible you had some air in the system that worked it's way out. A pressure test on your cooling system will tell if there are any leaks, you can't tell if the cap is working ok just by looking at it.

Bill That sound like the egr cooler is starting to leak. If left alone and not fixed it will bust the cooler, dumping the coollent in the exhaust white smoke and steam everywhere. JUST had that to happen to my sons truck. Cost of repair 2000.00. HIS WAS A 2005 75,000 mi 70 to90 seems to be the magic numbers. You ought to have egr cooler checked. When it lets go your dead in the water. Google egr cooler problems for more info. Hope this helps Gary

I had smoke & steam coming out exhaust of my 06 at 79K and it was the exhaust cooler. Took a few days at dealer to fix. Learned the warranty on the engine had been extended to 100K so didn't see the cost. Also had problem after repair with keeping water level on the mark. Was told there was suppose to be a sticker on my 06 changing the level marks on the reservoir and that fixed that problem.

The warranty is only for the engine, not the Power Train. I had to pay for the Transmission gasket $650, but for the oil leak fix, replacing a head gasket, I only had to pay the $100 deductible. Was told that in 2009 the added the power train to include the transmission.

Just had the same problem with my 06 PSD. Running now problem, then a large amount of white smoke started to emit from the exhaust. Called the dealer and then knew exactly what the problem was, EGR cooler. They replaced the EGR cooler and oil cooler under warranty at a cost to me of $100. Apparently when the EGR cooler goes, the oil cooler should also be replaced. As the turbo is also part of the engine warranty, they proactively replaced that as well since they see these blow on the 6.0 around 100K and wanted to get it in before I run it out. Thank god for a great dealer!!
Other than this service, the truck has been flawless. Tire, Brakes, and CV joints on the front axle have also been replaced, but all within normal wear periods.
Good luck with your repairs and hopefully warranty coverage. Tim

Thanks for all the info. I replaced the cap as I saw some debris on the inside gasket. Hopefully that is the problem. We'll see how she goes today as we are headed to Bismarck ND for 8 days. If we run into any issues I will hopefully get it in at a dealer in Bismarck.

Now I am getting nervous about mine. My 6.0 has 78K miles on it with never a single problem. Sounds like I may have a ticking time bomb. I still have a year of warranty left thank thank goodness. Guess I'll keep a close watch for any problems in the next year.
