Low of 4 below zero
last Tuesday. high of 81 today. 2020 was a weird year. I was hoping for 2021 to get off to a more normal start.

Wow we live is western Va. It is supposed to be colder here than in Texas but we haven’t been that cold in years and only in the low twenties this year. Last year I rode my motorcycle most of the winter. This year it’s been on average 6 degrees colder than last.

How deep do they have to bury water lines to keep them from freezing. And how do you keep home water pipes from freezing. Heck, how do you even keep a house warm?

I don’t think my heat pump would keep up with that.

Ya we bitch about heat more I think. 80 is too warm for me unless humidity is about 20%.

Makes you have a lot of respect for the native Americans, early explorers, early settlers, mountain men, and all the others that endured the extreme winter weather with minimum shelter and lived to tell about it. Although the number who didn’t survive, I am sure, is huge.
I grew up in a house that was not insulated and we only had two small unvented gas space heaters. And never used those at night for fear of carbon monoxide. But we had a lot of quilts my grandmother made. Piled them on until you could hardly move. And never thought much about it. Just normal. Of course we also didn’t have air conditioning when morning lows were mid 80’s and daily highs were often 102-105 or higher. Again, just normal. Too old and soft for that now.

Ditto that. My parents were missionaries and when I was in high school we lived one year in Quebec, CA for language study and then moved to Ivory Coast, Africa. That year in Quebec we had 40 deg below and 12' of snow. In Africa we had highs of 120 deg in the hot season with no AC. Both were great adventures and I wouldn't trade them, but dang...
Now I just want to camp alongside a lake and sit in the shade
