Dave, I think you will find that you will be fine. The 3400 has one of the lightest pin weights I think that is true so you should be OK with it. If it sages you will need to add air bags to help you out. I towed a 3685FL with 2001 F250 prior to getting my F350. I really , mean really do like the long bed alot I mean alot better than the short bed, due to never having to worry about the cab of the truck.
Why do you think you need a dually? I find my F350 SRW does great no need for dually, and my rig is heavy with heavy pin weight. I think my 2001 GVW was 7500lbs or very close to it, and it was a crew cab. Know my F350 has GVW of 8,800 lbs.
I guess what I am saying is I think it will do fine, but is it at good cost?
