I think it will be a tough job to lower the bed platform.
I did this sketch for another thread dealing with casters on the bottom a while back - but it shows the bed frame guts and the "floor" section under the head of the bed - which will limit the dimension that you can lower the frame. Hopefully others will chime in that have tried and suceeded.

Do you have a link to this thread? Our bedroom slide is dragging on the carpet.

I have no idea how to provide a link to a thread on the iPad - so I take screen shots. This is not the thread where I first posted that sketch - but I think it was Daryles who was discussing casters for the bed. This screen shot is another thread with Daryles explaining his fix. There are more pics if you can find the thread.

We installed a 12 inch thick Helix mattress a few years ago. That made the bed really, really high. In order to get in the bed, we just use a step. We've been using one of these on each side of the bed for a long, long time now:
These, click here.

We have the same model/year with a king. We added a mattress topper so that the height is 11-12 inches.
In case your shelves are interfering, we raised our shelves by redrilling the metal brackets and raising the shelves to just touch the outlet faceplate. I considered shortening the back of the shelves and relo'ing them to get past the faceplate a little more but found the redrill sufficent.
If you really want to change the bed box, you'll find that it's attached just like MikenDebbie's picture - 2x matl connects it to the slide wall. To MnD's point, that will take work. One way might be to use metal stringers with an L at the slide wall to replace the 2x matl and cut the sides of the box down to get a couple inches. The stringers would need to be stiff enough to not flex when the slide is pushed in and the mattress pushes against the dresser and also not bend when the box becomes cantilevered on rollers when pushed in. Dutchmensport's solution saves a lot of work and cost. You could build custom steps that are longer but the idea is the same.
Re the cantilever, our topper is heavy and when we first got the trailer, we loaded the box with too much gear (we were work camping during many trips at the time) so that the 2x matl started disconnecting. We addressed it by reconnecting with additional support, reduced the gear, and added the same style rollers to the box (so they roll with the box) at the dresser-end to eliminate the cantilever.

Matress height
Try taking the plywood cover off the bed frame. Now attach a guide running board for your router on the outside face of frame.
This eliminates tearing the frame apart and rebuilding it.
Adjust the guide board the amount you want to lower plus the router plate. You will lose some or all the storage of the matress hidden storage.
Now do the same to the headboard ledger. This if you can removal would be easier for cutting.
After you finish cutting with the router, finish cutting with handsaw or other type.
Now replace plywood cover and matress and you should be set to go.
Hope this helps.

Mattress Height
I maybe a little late to the post.
We had the same problem when we changed our mattress (3rd time). My wife asked me to if I could make a step for her as she is 5'3". So I first made a 6" step with a hinged cover and she looked at it and asked could I make one with a drawer. So had to make two with a 6" step, one with a drawer for her, and the original for me with the cover, no step needed (I am 6'4"). My recommendation would be to make a step with storage verses trying to change the bed height. Hope the pics post ... the drawer pull is my wife's and the drawer with knob is mine.
Good luck!
